Join our department for a guest lecture on Monday, March 28 with James R. Elliott, Chair of Sociology at Rice University. Rising inequality and environmental hazards pose mounting threats to community well-being.
This talk will investigate their dynamic intersection in two distinct lines of investigation. The first will draw from a recent co-authored book with Scott Frickel, Sites Unseen (winner of the 2020 book award in Urban Sociology), to illuminate the spread of land-based industrial pollution via policies that both enable and hide its impacts. The second line of investigation will draw from recent work with Junia Howell to illuminate the growing wealth inequalities linked to rising natural disaster costs and federal recovery assistance. Implications for thinking and acting on environmental justice in the age of climate change will be discussed.
