School is back in session. What a better time then any to refresh your knowledge and memory on your child’s IEP. Ensure you review their accomodations, service minutes, and LRE. You want to make sure your child’s schedule reflects their service minutes and that all their teachers know how to help them in class.

With school starting in August. It’s time to think about why refreshing your knowledge of parental rights is important. It’s also important to refresh yourself on your child’s current IEP and ensure you know when the date is for their annual and or reevaluation this school year. You want to ensure your child’s needs are being met day 1!

Why do I need or want an Advocate?

This week I saw a father who didn’t know if his child was receiving enough minutes in speech and Ocupational therapy. He felt as though his child could use more but then was unsure if he was correct or not. He also was unsure how to ask for more or if he was even allowed. The IEP team did give him his parent rights but if you’ve seen the packet it’s about 75 pages long and many parents don’t understand it all.

This week I saw a mom request a full cognitive assessment for her son and be told that the psychologist didn’t feel it was needed becausee everyone knew that this child needed significant support and one can be done in 3 years. This was a re-evaluation and the perfect time for this assessment to be done. The child will be in 3rd grader and alternative state testing in Colorado requires proof of a cognitive disability or significant cognitive delay to take it. This mom had every right to ask for one and the team should was required by law to do so. But they said it’s not going to happen this year.

These are just examples of how an advocate can support these frustrating moments and know exactly what to say and what to do to ensure your child is receiving the best support.

What is an IEP?
- individualized education plan

This is a document that requires schools to meet the needs of a child with a disability/disabilities.
It lists students needs, students strengths, student accommodations and modifications, service minutes, IEP goals, Extended school year qualification, and testing accommodations and needs for both district and state tests.

Each child’s IEP should be created based on their own needs and not a generalized statement or goals for all students under that service provider.

I love my son and my experience with him and his IEP and school journey has encouraged me to start this buisness and help other parents who love their kiddos on an IEP and need support to ensure their rights are being met in school

About the Owner. My name is Raena. I have a Masters in Special Education. I spent the last 14 years as a special education teacher in the public school setting. I have a lot of experience writing, implementing, and holding IEP’s. I created Inspire IEP because of my son. Even with all my years experience, finding out my son had adhd and autism and required an IEP was overwhelming. It took a lot of back and forth to ensure my son’s needs were properly being met. Even though they knew I was a special ed teacher, they would forget I knew my parent rights like the back of my hand. I don’t ever want parents who don’t know their rights to feel like this. I want to be the voice for those parents and students. I want to ensure your child gets the best support possible, the best goals , accommodations, and services, etc. I don’t ever want any child to be left behind or forgot about or shoved under a rug. So it would be my honor to help you through your childs IEP journey .

In my spare time I am a mommy and love spending time with my children. They are my world. I love traveling. I am a Disney momma and love to go to Disney!!
