A few of you asked so here is my updated autism friendly finds list!

Comment link and I’ll dm you a link to this list or link in my bio to find all my lists.

A little disclaimer that I always put on these lists- buying a bunch of new stuff is not necessary or usually even helpful. However, when you are buying something or making gift lists keeping sensory needs, exectutive functioning needs, and personal strengths in mind can lead to finding items that are a better fit and get more use.
I use Amazon to gather links but most items are widely available.

April is Autism Acceptance Month!

To start the month, I want to talk about how to think about or visualize autism.

One misconception created by the term ā€œautism spectrumā€ and the use of levels in the diagnosis is that autism is simply a straight line with people being either ā€œmoreā€ or ā€œlessā€ autistic. When viewed through this lens, people can assume that if they don’t see a particular stereotypical trait, such as hand flapping, it is because the person is not autistic or is ā€œless autistic.ā€ On the flip side, it can lead people to think that someone who does have a noticeable stereotypical autism trait is ā€œmore autistic.ā€ In reality, every autistic person’s experience is unique and can change by age and setting.

Dyslexia has been in the news again this week, but there are so many misconceptions about what dyslexia is and how it impacts people.

Dyslexia is a disability that creates real difficulties in people’s lives AND results in unique ways of thinking that contribute so much to society.

Neurodivergent kids and teens often have patterns of development that look ā€œunevenā€ compared to their neurotypical peers. They might have some intellectual, physical, and or emotional abilities that are behind their peers, others that are ahead, and some that are right ā€œon trackā€. This week on the pod, we are digging into all things asynchronous development: what it looks like in practice, why it’s so common among neurodivergent people, and what we can do to support.
