It's time to love Mother Earth and reduce our carbon footprint (go to footprintcalculator.org to see how big your footprint really is). The Dharmic traditions, that is, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, are at the foundation of our yoga practice and can teach us much about our relationship with the environment. Join me for Yoga Philosophy Talks on July 11 and July 25, 5:30 - 7:00 pm MT, to explore this topic and get tips for being a better planetary citizen. You can also purchase these talks, as well as the first in the series from June 27, to watch at your convenience (you do not have to attend all 3). $15 per talk, or $40 for any 4 talks. Message me for the Zoom and payment information.

The Dharmic traditions, the Environment and Climate Change is a highly personal topic for this vegan yoga teacher. After receiving a B.A. in Environmental, Population and Organismic Biology, I had the idea of becoming something of a naturalist. Many twists and turns later, here I am researching this topic in great depth to share with you (I study with scholars from all over the world and spend about 40 hours preparing for each talk).
If you haven’t joined us before, this is a great series to start with. No previous yoga or philosophy experience is required. Investment: $15 per talk or $40 for any 4 talks. Access to the class recording is available if you can't attend "live." Message me for the Zoom and payment information.

In this first talk, we’ll meditate on and explore the interconnected web of life and our interdependence. We’ll consider the ecosystem and our place within it with the Earth Verses from the Atharva Veda and the story of Satyakama Jabala from the Chandogya Upanisad. And you’ll be introduced to the problem with an overview of pollution sources and climate change.
In the second talk, we’ll meditate on the 5 elements with bija mantras to strengthen our ecological connection. You’ll hear stories about our human relationship with animals. Then we’ll delve into the treatment of animals and animal agriculture. We’ll look at our food choices and consider the vegetarian/vegan diet. We’ll contemplate our consumerism, consumption and waste. You’ll get practical tips for reducing your own climate footprint.
In the third and final talk, we’ll start with Buddhist meditation/contemplative practice. We’ll explore the yamas and niyamas in relation to climate change, with an emphasis on ahimsa, nonharming. We’ll learn about modeling Jain and Buddhist ethics. We’ll look at professions that are prohibited in Jain texts that challenge our climate. We’ll briefly touch on the effects of war on our climate. Finally, we’ll talk about community-based solutions and our personal commitment to solving the problem.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, tai chi and qigong, each season is associated with an element and an organ. Summer is ruled by fire and is the season of the heart. The heart is considered the emperor of the body and is the “seat” of the mind. When the fire element is balanced, there is an equilibrium between the heart and mind. We feel a joyous energy.
Join me for this heart-centered tai chi and qigong flow as we welcome in summer. The Zoom information is in the comments section below. Look for occasional virtual tai chi offerings. I do offer a weekly in-person Tai Chi class at Glendale Sports Center, Fridays, 10:45 - 11:45 am (SilverSneakers eligible).

Yoga is so much more than asana (yoga postures). Join me tomorrow evening to learn about eating and singing in yoga and transformation (primarily from the work of Dr. Christopher Jain Miller). Explore the yogic diet and American counterculture. Hear about kirtan, including the social history of the European harmonium.
On May 23, in part 2 (which can be taken on its own), we'll contemplate performing pranayama (breathing exercises) in pollution. We’ll also talk about dressing for yoga: yoga apparel and climate change, as well as the "Neoliberal Yogi.
