As the green leaves are dying, i have noticed this soft, stringy lichen on the forest floor-called Old Man's Beard, or Usnea.
It grows incredibly slow, just 1-3mm per year! So I dont take it off from living trees.
I only gather what's already fallen; honoring the pace and fragility of the forest
Wildcrafting isn't just about collecting. it's about listening, respecting, and leaving more than we take.

I kept seeing this soft, stringy lichen on the forest floor and learned it’s called Old Man’s Beard—or Usnea.
It’s not just beautiful—it’s known for helping with respiratory health and has antimicrobial properties, but I’ still learning how to work with it.
I only collect what has already fallen, never from living trees; especially since it grows only 1-3mm per year.

That slow growth makes it even more special, and a reminder to forage with care.

foraging keeps me curious and connected to the land every day.

Lichen Spotlight: Nature’s Quiet Power

Found some beautiful lichen while foraging this weekend —and it’s more than just a funky patch on a tree.
Lichens are ancient symbiotic organisms made of fungi and algae. They help form soil, clean the air, and even act as bioindicators for environmental health.
Some types have been used in traditional medicine for centuries—supporting respiratory health, soothing inflammation, and even offering antimicrobial properties.

I’m still exploring how to work with them safely and respectfully, but just finding them felt like a quiet win.
Mountain living keeps me curious, grounded, and always learning.

Some days, it’s the little things that keep us going—a kind message, a shared post, a donation, or someone simply asking how Fungi Focus is doing.
This journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been real. And we are so grateful for every person who’s believed in this vision, even when things got tough.
From the mountains of Black Hawk to the hearts of those who support small, intentional businesses—thank you. You’re part of this story.

Winter’s creeping in up here in Black Hawk, and we’re prepping with intention.
Layers are thicker, blends are stronger, and the lab is slowly transforming into a cozy little powerhouse.
Running a small business in the mountains isn’t always easy—but it’s always worth it.
Fungi Focus is built on resilience, and this season is no different.

Lion’s Mane is more than a trend—it’s personal. This mushroom has been instrumental in supporting my elderly dog’s cognitive health as she ages (she began taking Lion’s Mane at age 6), and it’s a key tool we utilize at Fungi Focus for memory support and cognitive wellness.

💖Whether you’re caring for a loved one, aging with dignity, or simply seeking to maintain mental clarity, Lion’s Mane is a gentle yet potent ally. We incorporate it with intention, and share it with love.

Our new space is slowly coming to life—and every piece of gear we add brings us closer to full production. We recently picked up a new vacuum chiller from Vevor, and it’s already making a huge difference in our extraction process.
Grateful for the progress, even in small steps 💛

🌿 Big News from Fungi Focus! We’ve Relocated & We’re Ready to Grow 🌿

After navigating some tough terrain in Grand Junction, we’ve officially moved to Black Hawk, Colorado—and the difference is night and day.

Our next big step? Upgrading to larger, more efficient equipment; a 5-liter (or larger) rotovap would help boost production and meet growing demand. This piece of equipment is a game-changer—it’ll help us process more material, create stronger infusions, and scale sustainably.

We’ve updated our GoFundMe to reflect this new chapter and our evolving goals. If you’ve supported us before, THANK YOU. If you’re just joining us, welcome! Every donation, share, or kind word helps us move forward.

💛 Donate $60+ and you’ll receive a thank-you gift plus access to our monthly subscription club

Let’s keep building something beautiful together.
