South High School's Student Senate Class of 2022 is proud to be hosting our first ever Wish Week! Wish Week is a week-long of fundraising to raise money for Make A Wish Colorado. We would like to introduce our community to Mia.
Mia was diagnosed with cancer on December 5th, 2019. She had cancer called Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS), which like almost all childhood cancers is "rare", aggressive, and requires long difficult treatment. Some weeks it is quite literally a life and death fight. Her treatment was successful and after 11 months she was declared to be in full remission.
The link to our donation page is in our bio. We will have a school-wide competition so make sure to donate to the class your child. Our school goal is $5,000!
We will be sharing the calendar of events throughout week via Schoology, the South website, and Instagram!

South Family,
Thank you for another great week! We have some exciting news to lead into the weekend.
We are pleased to announce the Ravens as the new mascot for South High School.
The South High School mascot has been the Rebels since the school’s founding in 1926. The Rebels is a reference to the southern Confederacy in the Civil War. Nearly 100 years after the school’s founding, the Rebels no longer seems appropriate, acceptable, or an accurate representation of what South stands for or should reflect in its mascot. For this reason, the leadership at South determined that the mascot should be updated to better represent the school’s values.
Over the past six months, South leadership completed the following research tactics to get a pulse on community input for the new mascot.
Focus groups with athletes and coaches, PTSA, board members and staff members.
Online surveys of students, parents, community members, alumni, faculty and staff resulting in nearly 1,000 responses.
Development of a mascot selection committee consisting of Denver City Council Representative, Musical Art Sponsors, Athletic Coaches, Alumni Board members, PTSA Board members, Student Body Co-Presidents, Student Athletic Leadership Team Representatives, Student Board of Education Representative, teachers, and Current Building Administration.
As a result of this robust community feedback, the Ravens were selected as our new mascot. We believe that the Ravens represent the South community in a number of ways. Ravens are smart, clever birds that are known to be strategic problem solvers. They are empathetic, loyal creatures that form lifelong bonds. And importantly, the raven is an inclusive animal -- it has a long history of being held in high regard both in Native American culture and others throughout the world, and ravens are not associated with any particular gender or race.
We appreciate all the dedication to this process from our community and we look forward to presenting our new logo in the coming weeks. Go Ravens!
Sincerely,
Bobby Thomas
Principal, South High School

Today we turn the spotlight on a South student-athlete and his inspiring story which was recently highlighted by 9News.
Six months ago, Gavin Schaffer, a Junior at South was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Gavin has undergone 5 chemotherapy treatments over recent months and his road to recovery has him kicking cancers butt and on track to remission. If that isn’t inspiration enough, Gavin has continued to play lacrosse for his SEAL Club Team which also features many of his teammates from South. The same teammates who shaved their heads to support Gavin on his birthday. He hasn’t missed a game or practice this summer or fall which is absolutely amazing! With the support of his family, friends and teammates, Gavin has shown that a positive mindset and determination can overcome any challenge even one a great as cancer. You are an inspiration Gavin! Keep up the battle and know that the South community is proud of you and here for you.
