✨ UNT Alumni Spotlight featuring Michael Wright ('98) ✨
➡️ Michael Wright graduated in 1998 and quickly started his career in a new industry called e-commerce. Michael has been fortunate to stay in that industry and supply chain for the bulk of his career and currently serves as the vice president of marketing and communications at GXO — the world’s largest pure-play contract logistics provider and a Fortune 500 company. Michael and his wife of over 25 years, who is also a UNT alum with an education degree, raised two amazing daughters. Michael and his wife currently live in historic downtown McKinney where they enjoy being empty nesters and travel often.
❓ How has your experience at UNT shaped your personal or professional goals?
🟢 My time at UNT and in Denton was so impactful. I truly met some great friends and was exposed to some brilliant professors. Without a doubt, my most impactful student experience was joining the UNT study abroad program which was a summer session in London led by Dr. Don Vann — amazing man. That experience with students traveling around Europe and learning from Dr. Vann and other experts shaped me and helped build my resume as my first job indicated my international experience helped me stand out from other candidates. I would encourage every student to pursue a study abroad program with UNT — it develops you in ways you cannot always get from the classroom.
❓ Where's the most unexpected place you’ve run into another UNT alum?
🟢 I have actually seen UNT gear around the globe, which is a testament to the size and influence of our university. However, the most unexpected was seeing someone wearing a UNT sweatshirt on the subway platform in Shanghai, I was on the train and wasn’t able to speak to him but seeing the logo was a great surprise and a nice reminder of home.
❓ If you could give your freshman-year self one piece of advice, what would it be?
🟢 Take advantage of the experiences, the support system and expertise that UNT has to offer. Absolutely use the Career Center — I did, and they helped me secure my first interview and job. Leverage the wisdom of the professors and staff, ask questions (even after class) and value the friendships you build. You can learn from those friends too. Finally, attend every UNT sporting event you can! What a great way to spend time with friends, support your university and have lasting memories that extend beyond the classroom — it is all part of the college experience!

✨ UNT Alumni Spotlight featuring Brandon D. Daniels ✨
➡️ Brandon D. Daniels is an accomplished chief operations officer with over a decade of experience in strategic leadership and performance improvement within government and higher education sectors. Currently serving as COO at the D.C. Department of Buildings, he oversees multiple divisions including human resources, customer affairs, risk and emergency management and data analytics. In addition, he is a lecturer in education at Georgetown University.
Daniels earned his Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds an M.S. in higher education administration from Florida State University and a B.A. in English composition and language from the University of North Texas, where he was an orientation leader, member of the Residence Hall Association, SGA, NT40 and served as student body president from 2001-2002.
❓ What does being a UNT alumni mean to you?
🟢 My experience at UNT has shaped every step of my journey. No matter where I travel in the world, I proudly wear my Mean Green colors. I had the honor of serving as student body president my senior year, and during that time we launched the “I Bleed Green” campaign to strengthen school spirit across campus. Anyone who knows me will tell you — that motto still defines me. I love UNT. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of graduating from and teaching at some of the most prestigious institutions in the country, yet none of them compare to UNT. The sense of community, purpose and authenticity I found there is unmatched.
❓ If you could give your freshman-year self one piece of advice, what would it be?
🟢 "Being the author of your own story." We have so much agency to craft and mold the experiences that shape our lives. We get to decide the narrative — there is a difference between happening to live our life and intentionally building it. We also have the opportunity to "revise" our story at any point — we don't have to be locked in to a bad storyline. We are impacted by real-world experiences — context matters. We have to open up our world and know there are other characters that we need to interact with intentionally, that help us, and the story, move along.
❓ What’s something you learned outside the classroom that really impacted you?
🟢 From the moment I arrived at UNT, I immersed myself in campus life and student organizations, and I was fortunate to be embraced early on as a student leader by an extraordinary group of faculty and staff — Deborah Leliaert, Joel Daboub, Gloria Cox, Maureen “Moe” McGuinness, Sue Delmark, Kenneth Ballom, Amy Ayres, Elizabeth With, and many others. They taught me that leadership is rooted in how you treat people, in empathy, in servant leadership and in recognizing that setbacks are temporary and often transformative. Their impact has been foundational to my growth and success in my current role.
