✨ Honoring Excellence. Celebrating Mean Green. ✨

💚 The 2026 UNT Alumni Achievement Awards are coming up and we're recognizing these outstanding members of the UNT family.

🏆 Distinguished Alumni Award honoree Susan Gabbard's career in art education spans more than 45 years, providing extensive experience as a visual art educator and arts education leader. She received a B.A. in art education from UNT in 1970 and an M.A. in art education in 1994. Gabbard taught art for 30 years in K-12 public and private schools in Texas and Oklahoma. She previously served as director of visual and performing arts for Oklahoma City Public Schools, as president of the Oklahoma Art Education Association, and as Western Region vice president and later president of the National Art Education Association.

✨ UNT Alumni Spotlight featuring Cameron Hernholm ('99) ✨

➡️ Cameron Hernholm is the chief advancement officer at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, where she leads philanthropy, marketing, communications and community engagement in support of the museum’s mission and aerospace-STEM education programs. With more than 23 years of nonprofit leadership experience, Cameron has built transformational fundraising campaigns and helped organizations throughout North Texas expand their impact.
For her work in philanthropy, she was named Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Dallas Chapter in 2024.

A proud UNT alumna, Cameron earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology, graduating with honors. She remains active with the UNT Alumni Association and also serves as a nonprofit board leader, mentor and advocate for education and community engagement.

❓ How has your experience at UNT shaped your personal or professional goals?
🟢 My experience at UNT literally helped me find my career. As part of my sociology and political science degree requirements, I completed internships that gave me the opportunity to explore several different paths, including the Texas State Treasury, the office of Congresswoman Kay Granger and a social service nonprofit. It was during that nonprofit internship that I discovered fundraising and realized I could build a career around connecting people with causes that make our communities stronger. More than 20 years later, I’m still doing the work I first discovered as a UNT student. I’m incredibly grateful that my education gave me opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and ultimately find work that I love.

❓What's something you learned outside the classroom that really impacted you?
🟢 Some of my most important lessons at UNT came from being actively involved on campus. I served as a UNT Student Government Association senator and was involved with NT40 and Mortar Board. Those experiences taught me about leadership, service, relationships and the importance of showing up for your community. I learned that leadership isn’t just about holding a title — it’s about contributing, bringing people together and leaving a place better than you found it. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career in nonprofit leadership and philanthropy.

❓What does being a UNT alumna mean to you?
🟢 I’m incredibly proud to be a UNT alumna. I graduated with honors when what is now the Honors College was still an honors program, so it has been wonderful to watch it grow into the college and community it is today. UNT gave me so much more than a degree. It gave me opportunities to lead, serve, explore different career paths and ultimately discover the work that would become my life’s profession. Being a UNT alum means being part of a community that helped shape who I am, and one I’m proud to remain connected to today.
