Joanna Davis-McElligatt is an Assistant Professor of Black Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of North Texas.
She is the author of Black Aliens: Kinship in the Cosmic Diaspora (OSUP 2026), and the co-editor of four volumes, including BOOM! SPLAT! Comics and Violence (UPM 2024) and bell hooks’s Radical Pedagogy: New Visions of Feminism, Love, Justice, and Resistance in the Classroom (Bloomsbury 2025). She served as the President of the Comics Studies Society from 2023-2024.
Tom Hart is a cartoonist and the Executive Director of The Sequential Artists Workshop, a school and arts organization in Gainesville, Florida. His 2016 memoir, Rosalie Lightning debuted at #1 on the NY Times Bestseller List and has been featured on many end of year Best-Of lists.
He is the creator of the Hutch Owen series of graphic novels and books, and has been nominated for all the major industry awards. His The Collected Hutch Owen was nominated for best graphic novel in 2000. He was an early recipient of a Xeric Grant for self-publishing cartoonists, and has been on many best-of lists in the Comics Journal and other comix publications.

Come join us for an informal chat and share your experiences, insights, lessons learned, or questions you may have about hosting your own comics-related events. If there are resources or materials you’d recommend, feel free to share links with the group. We’d also love to see pictures or samples of comics made during one of your events!
