Come join us in the Tech Editor Hub Community tomorrow morning for a special pop-up workshop on Editing Collections and Books.
You've edited single patterns for designers and now you are ready to branch out to do editing contract work for publishers and yarn companies. Collections and books, oh my! This is a whole new world: deadlines with tight schedules, working with an editorial team, and managing and editing a large amount of text. How do you tackle this and thrive?

In this 1-hour session, Sarah will cover:
- the pros and cons of this kind of editing work
- the typical workflow from draft to layout proofs
- what to expect in an assignment
- how to plan your schedule
- how to estimate accurately
- what skills you will need to acquire

Plus, we'll discuss the super important style sheet and you'll get a template for creating one specific to books and collections.

These workshops are just for community members. If you're not already in the community, you can sign up using the link in the comments.

Join us inside the TE Hub Community this week for our latest workshop, "Outside the Yarn Box: Working as an Admin and KAL/CAL Moderator." If you're not already a member, you can sign up with the link in my bio!

Providing support to designers beyond technical editing is a fantastic way to increase your business revenue as well as bolster your relationship with the designers. In this session, we will learn how to offer services to become a pattern support admin and/or KAL/CAL moderator. These roles provide unique opportunities to:
🧶 gain a new perspective of pattern use
🧶 be on the forefront of user experiences
🧶 learn why certain words/phrases and formatting in a pattern create challenges for the maker
🧶 stay abreast of what is new, popular, and coming your way to be tech edited
🧶 assist English speakers with patterns in English (or in other languages!)

Theresa Almeida () is a wordsmithing enthusiast and champion of clarity, dogmatic in consistency while creatively imagining solutions to communicate technical concepts. She is a lead technical editor, pattern grader, and ghostwriter for knitting designs.

Let's dispel some contract myths! In this 1-hour session with Kiffanie Stahle of The artist's J.D., you will learn:

🧶 The real purpose of a contract is to make sure you don’t unintentionally disappoint your clients
🧶 What’s actually required to create a contract (hint, it’s not legalese)
🧶 How your contract is part of your client experience and helps build trust
🧶 Why the format of your contract matters
🧶 The contract legal nitty gritty is just there to pre-determine the outcome when common situations arise

Kiffanie is a photographer, knitter, and a lawyer for creatives. She believes that you can have ease in the legalese of running your creative business, and runs The Artist's JD, a website that helps creatives navigate their legal issues.

You are not AI 04/22/2025

Do you think AI can replace tech editors?

Please tell me your thoughts below.

I personally (and firmly) believe no--we do too many things requiring human cognition. Our job may morph as the years progress, but I still think we will be needed as long as patterns are produced. I wrote about it here:

You are not AI Friends, AI cannot do what you do. And in my opinion, it may never be able to--AI is not genuinely intelligent and has no ingenuity (look up François Chollet's studies). Technical editing of the caliber that we execute in each pattern we edit requires a type of human intelligence that computers can...
