The Department of Economics is excited to introduce a brand-new course to be offered in Fall 2026: ECON 3400 Applied Machine Learning!
So, what is machine learning? Have you ever wondered how online platforms recommend new content tailored to your interests, how analysts forecast housing prices in fast-changing markets, or how financial institutions detect fraudulent credit card transactions in real time? The answer often lies in machine learning (also known as statistical learning or econometrics of big data) -- teaching computers to make predictions and identify patterns based on data.
In this course, students will explore fundamental machine learning techniques through hands-on coding exercises in Python, and learn how these methods power real-world applications in economics, business, policy analysis, and beyond. By the end, students will have the skills and knowledge to turn raw data into actionable insights that support better decision-making.
