On September 17th, four talented designers will each bring their own vision, curiosity, and way of seeing plants to Van Berkum's Open House.
We’ve invited them to create within the same small canvas, a 4' × 8' garden, but otherwise, we’re giving them room to play.
Different eyes. Different plants. Different stories.
Together, these gardens will be a little experiment in what happens when designers are given a small space, a beautiful palette of plants, and plenty of room for imagination.
Friend of the nursery and design extraordinaire, Rochelle Greayer, will facilitate the conversation as we tour and explore these thumbnail creations.
We are so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait for you to meet them!

There are few things we love more than watching good work take root and today we had the joy of welcoming the Armenia Tree Project for a tour and conversation.

Their work is extraordinary: restoring forests, planting trees, strengthening communities, and nurturing a deeper relationship between people and place in Armenia. It is the kind of work that asks us to think not just about what we can grow, but what we can help endure.

We’re so grateful to UNH Forestry and Emily Drury for making the connection and bringing this wonderful group our way. What a gift to share a little of what we do and learn from their work.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula rubra ‘Venusta’) is impossible to walk past without stopping. Towering clouds of soft pink flowers carry a light, sweet fragrance that drifts through the garden and draws in bees, butterflies, and curious noses alike.

Its name has roots in old traditions—meadowsweet was once used to scent rooms and celebrations, its delicate blooms scattered to bring sweetness to the air. A plant of beauty, habitat, and history, it reminds us that gardens are not just seen, but experienced through all the senses.

Hacking into the VBN social media page today for a special announcement from John’s (typically silent) partner... this week celebrates 5 years 😳 of VBN ownership for John and it has been incredible to watch the transformation from borderline-terrified new business owner to the ambitious entrepreneur he is becoming.  We are so grateful that Peter & Leslie van Berkum gave us this opportunity and couldn’t be more lucky to have the crew/staff/VBN family on board making it happen every day.  Turns out, it’s been a pretty awesome place to raise kids as well.  Beyond proud of John and excited to see what happens next.... perhaps return of the mustache?!  ❤️ Ingrid, Nell & Clara Gedraitis
