We can't express enough gratitude to the folks who joined Decorah yoga/cycling studio Reefuel in donating to our local chapter of Girls Who Code via ArtHaus by attending this year's donation-based Summer Solstice Yoga event. Between participant donations & a gift from Reefuel, over $500 was raised to help us keep this free after-school programming going. We see you, community! Thank you & namaste!

"Teachers decorated two classrooms. One of them had kind of traditionally 'nerdy' paraphernalia in it, like 'Star Trek' posters & comic books, & video games. The other one had neutral objects. Like coffee cups, & plants, & art posters. What they found was that female college students who spent time in this traditionally 'nerdy' classroom, exhibited a markedly lower preference for computer science as a field than those who spent time in the neutral room. But for males, it made no difference whatsoever."

We're kicking off our community tomorrow + we couldn't be more excited or grateful! Joining our coders Thursday will be several female Computer Science students at Luther College, who are generously volunteering to lend moral + intellectual support to our girls throughout the year-- AND we're literally getting this party started with pizzas provided by Jason Trout/GoodBlogs.com. We'll begin our year by identifying a local issue the girls want to address with a technology we'll create together. Annnnnd, we're off!

Thanks to all of the area women who joined us last May for the "Tech + Tea" event that allowed us to create this beautiful short video on how + why it matters for women to be empowered in this way. It was a pleasure to view it with you all at the ArtHaus screening of "Code: Debugging the Gender Gap" last Saturday. We launch classes this week! We're DOING it!
