Friday, August 29, Writer Hannah Palmer & "Drive About" Screening at Sycamore Place Gallery
Start Labor Day weekend with a screening -- and book talk -- featuring local writer Hannah Palmer and her book "The Pool Is Closed.”
In mid-June, Hannah and I made a video of driving to pools in her community of southwest Atlanta and talking about the importance of public swimming pools and the issues -- historic, social, economic and environmental -- surrounding them. Of course, they're also sites of great joy and community building.
In addition to the 30-minute video, Hannah will read a selection from the book and sign copies for sale.

Friday (March 14), 7:30 p.m., join us for conversations and an outdoor screening of short docs about local people and places.
In his 2024 film Displaced but Not Erased, Piedmont University film student Jarrett Ray uncovers the lost history of Beacon Hill, a once-thriving, predominantly Black community in Decatur, Georgia.
Paddle4Tomorrow (2025) by HJacobsDocs documents the volunteer work of a group of outdoor enthusiasts in Atlanta who organize kayak outings, nature walks and art programs for children at no cost to their families—with the emphasis on fun.
There will be Q&As after the films and guest speaker Greg White, formerly the recreation director in Decatur, will talk about his current project of helping the growing population of unhoused in the city.
Artist Liem G. Duong will talk about his paintings on display at the gallery.
DATE: March 14, beginning 7:30 pm
LOCATION: Sycamore Place Gallery, 120 Sycamore Place (behind Fellini’s on Commerce Dr.)
