My Life is Important Too.....

As an educator this is sobering.....

Cleaning out my room for the summer, I can’t help but reflect on this past school year. As I reflect, I can truly say that I am grateful. I am grateful because I set out to become a teacher and I did it! This is a second career for me and this journey began in 2014. I left a job in corporate America, unhappy and unsure of my future. I reluctantly started working at the elementary school that my sons were attending as a kindergarten assistant. This was totally NOT what I expected to be doing with my life. As time passed I realized that I was enjoying what I was doing and that I seemed to be making a difference. I also realized that there was a glaring need for men in the elementary setting, especially black men. What started out as me helping out at my boy’s school until I figured out my “next move”, turned into me enrolling in an elementary education graduate program in 2017. This time last year, I graduated and was blessed with an opportunity to teach fifth grade at the school I started as an assistant. It has been quite a journey and this first year has been one to remember for obvious reasons. However, I am grateful for the journey thus far and excited to see what’s next!
