The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools.

To be considered for the UCLA Summer Health Professions Education Program, an applicant must:
•Be a currently enrolled college freshman or sophomore
•Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
•Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa
•not have previously participated in SHPEP.

Other factors that are considered include that a student:
•Identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine or dentistry (as defined by each site);
•Comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background;
•Has demonstrated an interest in issues affecting underserved populations;
•Submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation

On October 8th, 2016 40 CCC students and staff got up bright and early to make the trip to UC Davis where they spent the day attending educational sessions learning about all aspects of the medical field. From RN to MD this conference had it all and many students were able to not only learn a lot about their career of interest but also the road leading there.

Monday October 24th, several CCC students had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a tour and visit to Clovis Community Hospitals Outpatient OR where we learned all about surgical services and different fields in nursing. Thank you to Tom Minas and especially to our educator Lynne Kellogg for this amazing learning experience.

CHSU is having their health fair today from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Thank you to those CCC students that have volunteered to help them out today.

On October 1st our community partner CHSU is having a health fair and has invited CCC health science students to volunteer. This event is a great opportunity for those going into the health field to gain invaluable experience and it also looks wonderful on a resume.
