7 Scriptures to Seek Jesus in the Old Testament

Seek and find Jesus each day as you read the Old Testament this year.

7 scriptures weekly that testify of the life, mission, character, and atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Read one passage each day to find and come to know Jesus in the Doctrine and Covenants (individually or with your family).

As you read each passage, ask yourself one of the following questions:

What do these verses teach me about the life and mission of Jesus Christ?
What do these verses teach me about Jesus Christ?
What do these verses teach me about the character of Jesus Christ?
What do these verses teach me about the atonement of Jesus Christ?
Why is this specific name of Christ used in these verses?
How can I liken these verses unto myself?

How are you finding Jesus in the Old Testament?

Save this post to read each passage throughout the week (and share with a friend).

"Which of Jesus' names should I take upon myself this week?"

KING

Scripture: Psalm 89:18 “For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.”

Hymn or Song: : “Rejoice, the Lord is King” (Hymns, 66)

General Conference Quote: “Towering above all mankind stands Jesus the Christ, the King of glory, the unblemished Messiah, the Lord Emmanuel. In the hour of deepest sorrow we draw hope and peace and certitude from the words of the angel that Easter morning, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said” (Matt. 28:6)...He is our King, our Lord, our Master, the living Christ, who stands on the right hand of His Father. He lives! He lives, resplendent and wonderful, the living Son of the living God..” -Gordon B. Hinckley, April 1996 General Conference

Reflect:
How will this name of Jesus help me this week?
What can I learn about Christ's mission or attributes from this name?
How can I become more like Jesus Christ through this name?

"My earnest desire is that you will come to know Jesus by His many names and that you will become like Him as you exemplify His divine attributes in your life." -Jonathan S. Schmitt (October 2022 General Conference)

If there is a name of Christ you would love to have featured in the coming weeks, please leave a comment with the name and I will add it to my list.

Maybe you're looking at this challenge and thinking:

This sounds great...but August/September is CRAZY.
I know.

That's why I don't want you waiting for 40 calm, predictable days before you join us.
They aren't coming. 😂

Instead, let's learn how to connect with God inside the life we're already living.

Long study some days.
Five minutes other days.
Maybe just a Conference quote on another.
And some days? Rest.

You are allowed to have floors, stairs AND ceilings in your scripture study (and General Conference Study).
We're starting Monday.
Come anyway. 💜

Can I take one more thing off your plate before we start this challenge?

You do not need to decide right now what your scripture study is going to look like for the next 40 days.

Because I can almost guarantee...
it's going to change. 😂

One day you might have 30 minutes, a quiet house, your favorite pen, and time to really dig into a Conference talk.
Ceiling day. 🙌

Another day you may listen to part of the talk while driving.
Or read one paragraph before bed.
Floor day.

And there will be plenty of days somewhere in between.
That's why I love thinking about scripture study as:
Floors. Stairs. Ceilings.

Your “enough for today” can change depending on the day you're actually living.
And that's okay.
The goal isn't to make your life fit your scripture study.
It's to find meaningful ways to connect with God inside the life you're already living.

That's exactly what we're going to practice together for 40 days.

I don't want to study General Conference just so I can say:
“I finished all the talks. ✔️”

That's not really what I'm looking for.

I want to know:
What is the Lord teaching me?
What do I need to remember?
Is there something He's inviting me to do?
Is there something here that I didn't notice when I heard this talk the first time?

That's why I keep coming back to President Oaks's invitation to study and ponder the messages of General Conference prayerfully and act in faith on the principles they teach.
Because there is a promise connected to that kind of study:
personal revelation and guidance.

THAT is what I want these 40 days to be about.

Some days you may read an entire talk and take pages of notes.
Another day, one paragraph might stop you in your tracks.
Or one sentence might stay in your mind all day.
That matters too.

We're not just trying to get through the talks.
We're giving the talks another opportunity to get through to us.

If you'd like to spend the next 40 days studying with me, comment “40” and I'll send you the FREE challenge. 💜

We start August 24.

Reading an entire General Conference talk isn't the only way to study it.

I wish I had understood this years ago.

I spent way too much time worrying about whether I was studying the “right” way.

Did listening count?
Did I need to take notes?
Was reading one paragraph enough?

I've learned that my study can look different depending on the day.

And yours can too.

Maybe today you have 30 minutes and want to really dig into a talk.
Tomorrow you may have 7 minutes in the school pickup line.

Both days can give you an opportunity to connect with God.

That's exactly what we'll practice during my FREE 40-Day General Conference Challenge.
