Lessening trauma and stress, as well as the effects they have on children have become a passion of mine. To that end, today I applied to continue my education in a Graduate Certificate Program at Iowa State University Infant and Young Children Mental Health.

It’s a registered provider our program does monthly checks of every detector in the house. Since policy is that every child occupied room must have one that means checking 8 detectors. How do you maintenance yours?

As children learn and develop self-concept the “try on” many roles. One time they might be a hero, another the villain, sometime a puppy and they may even try out the opposite of what are typical gender roles. Like this “boy” in the comic who is said to be wearing a dress. Wearing a dress today does not necessarily mean he will wear one at any other time, let alone as an adult. Although, he may decide that wearing a dress helps him express himself, and that would be O.K. too. What matters most is the moment and how we respond to help the child I. Developing a healthy emotional outlook and positive self-concept.

I'll stop re-posting this cartoon when people stop getting mad about it. 😉

“I loved the attention. Until I didn’t.”
This story is a prime example of what r**e culture is, the results of perpetuating it and how a victim can even perpetuate it. This is not me blaming the victim, but pointing out how perpetrator perception can be built. One way to assist in changing this as carte blanche practice is by purposefully teaching children from a very young age about personal boundaries, the actions they should take when someone says “No” or “Stop” and how to be empathetic in ways of reading others perceptions.
