TOMORROW Centre’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Grace Doherty Library will host guest presenters Carrie Frey, director of library services, Beth Morgan library archivist, and Jojo Marcellon, coordinator of diversity and inclusion programming, as they explore Pathways to Diversity at Centre on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The panel event will discuss “where we were as an institution, the pathways to getting to where we currently are, and the journey that lies ahead that leads us to where we aspire to go.”

Without question – this is an event you DO NOT want to miss! In this very special Black History Month Keynote event, please join our distinguished guest, Stacey Abrams, for a moving and inspirational message. A well-respected political activist, Stacey is an author and recent Nobel Peace Prize nominee best known for her political activism in the State of Georgia where she and her grassroots organizations worked diligently to champion everyone's right to vote.

Concluding the keynote address, Stacey will be joined by her sister, Centre’s own – Associate Vice President for Diversity Affairs, Dr. Andrea Abrams. In this exclusive Q&A session, the two will address questions from the audience.

Black history month was founded by famed African American historian Carter G. Woodson, the Father of Black History.
He was born December 19th, 1975 in New Canton, Virginia, 12 years after emancipation, which means both of his parents were former enslaved peoples.
He earned his Bachelors in Literature at Berea College in Kentucky and received his Ph. D from Harvard.
He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 after facing rejection from the American Historical Association.
In 1926 Woodson pioneered the celebration of “Negro History Week” which took place every second week in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
The Black United Students and Black educators at Kent State University expanded this idea to include an entire month beginning on February 1st, 1970. Since 1976, every US president has designated February as Black History Month.

It is the officially the first day of Black History Month 2021! 🥳 Since 1976 February has been the designated month to celebrate the achievements of Black people and recognize all of their contributions that have helped mold the US into what it is today.
