This week, our principals, assistant principals, and instructional coaches are learning alongside Amber Birch-Trujillo, Senior Consultant with Diane Sweeney Consulting, as we sharpen the connection between Student-Centered Coaching and our district’s instructional priorities.

At Dalton Public Schools, our instructional priorities are not simply initiatives to know. They are the work. That means creating a shared understanding of what strong instruction looks like, how we recognize evidence of growth, and how we support teachers in moving that work forward with purpose and consistency.

Throughout these sessions, school teams are examining our instructional priorities, identifying opportunities for deeper implementation, and developing concrete next steps for principals and coaches.

A critical piece of that work is the partnership between school leaders and instructional coaches. When principals, assistant principals, and coaches are clear and aligned around the same priorities, the support teachers receive becomes more focused, more consistent, and more connected to the learning we want to see in every classroom.

Our new instructional coaches will spend additional time with Amber moving from understanding to application through classroom-embedded practice and the core practices of Student-Centered Coaching.

Clarity is what turns priorities into practice. By investing in this work, we are strengthening the systems, partnerships, and support that help great instruction take hold across our schools, because ultimately, every conversation about instruction should lead back to one thing: better learning for students.

Our Dual Language Immersion teachers are always learning, growing, and bringing new ideas back to their classrooms!

On Saturday, August 22, German and Spanish Immersion teachers from Brookwood and Westwood spent the day in Atlanta at GADII, the Georgia Dual Language Immersion Institute. Throughout the day, they connected with immersion educators from across Georgia, shared ideas, and explored current best practices for supporting language development and instruction. The training was presented by the Georgia Association of Multilingual Educators in collaboration with program specialists from the Georgia Department of Education.

And their learning doesn’t stop there! Our DLI teachers are also participating in a year-long book study of Scaffolding Language Development in Immersion and Dual Language Classrooms by Diane J. Tedick and Roy Lyster, hosted by the Southern Atlantic Language Collaborative.

We’re proud of the way our DPS DLI teachers continue investing in their own learning so they can strengthen instruction and create meaningful language-learning experiences for our students.

If you’re at the game tonight, keep an eye out for the Dalton Reads! van!

Dalton Reads! is all about getting books into the hands of our students and families and creating more opportunities to read beyond the school day. That means bringing books out into our community, right where our families already are.

You’ll see the Dalton Reads! van at football games, community events, and around Dalton throughout the year, stocked with books ready to find a new home!

So, are you at the game? 👀 Come find the Dalton Reads! van, say hi, and pick out a FREE book!

Hands-on learning with a purpose!

Seventh-grade science students recently participated in a Cell Extravaganza, an engaging introduction to their upcoming unit on cells.

Through a series of hands-on stations, students explored the different parts of a cell, their functions, and how those parts work together as a system. More importantly, the experience gave students an opportunity to build background knowledge and make connections before diving deeper into the content.

Creating these experiences at the beginning of a unit helps make new concepts more accessible, gives students a foundation for future learning, and sets the stage for deeper understanding as instruction progresses.

A great example of intentional instruction bringing science to life!

Our inaugural LEAD DPS cohort continues to put in the hard work as they move through their yearlong leadership journey. We are proud of the commitment, effort, and intentionality they continue to bring as they challenge themselves, reflect, and grow as leaders.

We are also incredibly grateful for our LEAD DPS mentors who are investing their time, experience, and encouragement into supporting our aspiring leaders throughout this journey. Their guidance is an important part of helping this group continue to grow and develop.

We kicked off our first District Administrative Team (DAT) and Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) meetings of the school year!

These meetings are an important part of how we stay connected and aligned across Dalton Public Schools. They bring school and district leaders together to plan, problem-solve, strengthen communication, and keep our shared priorities at the center of the work.

Through DAT and ILT, we create space to learn together, align our work, and have meaningful conversations that strengthen instruction and support our schools.

Starting the year together helps build a shared understanding of where we are headed and keeps our focus on what matters most: supporting our teachers and creating exceptional learning experiences for every student.

We’re excited for the work ahead and all that this year will bring as we continue learning, growing, and moving forward together!

We look forward to watching these aspiring leaders learn, grow, and continue developing their leadership capacity throughout the year. We can’t wait to see the impact they will make across Dalton Public Schools!

Congratulations to our first LEAD DPS cohort!

Dalton Public Schools is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural LEAD DPS (Learn. Empower. Advance. Develop.) program, a yearlong leadership development initiative designed to identify, cultivate, and prepare future leaders within the district.

Following a competitive application and interview process, 13 educators and staff members have been selected to participate in the first LEAD DPS cohort. The program reflects the district's commitment to developing a sustainable leadership pipeline while investing in employees who demonstrate strong leadership potential, a commitment to excellence, and a desire to positively impact students, staff, families, and the broader school community.

Day two brought even more excitement as all of our students officially returned to school!

This morning was especially meaningful as Roan School welcomed its Bobcats for their first day. The energy across the school was incredible, and it was exciting to see students and staff ready to begin the year together.

Our Teaching & Learning team was happy to be at every campus again this morning, but the best part was seeing Roan come to life with students back in the building. We are so glad everyone is here and ready for a great school year!
