Here's what Monday through Friday looks like on Kaizly for a 5th grader who loves space:

Monday (Reading): Passage about the Mars rover. Comprehension questions.
Tuesday (Math): Fractions using rocket fuel ratios. Planet distance word problems.
Wednesday (Science): How astronauts train for zero gravity. Forces and motion questions.
Thursday (Reading): Non-fiction about the International Space Station.
Friday (Review): Week recap and celebration of progress.

Every activity is 20 minutes. Every subject is at grade level. The only thing that's different is the topic.

When a kid cares about the topic, the 20 minutes doesn't feel like punishment. It feels like something they chose to do.

Teacher conferences just wrapped up.

Some of you got good news. Others heard the words: “Your child is behind.”

I’m writing this for that second group. Because what you do in the next 30 days matters more than what happened in the last 6 months.

Step 1: Don’t panic. Don’t guilt yourself. Kids fall behind for dozens of reasons and most of them aren’t your fault.

Step 2: Get specific. “Behind in math” means nothing actionable. You need to know: behind in fractions? In reading comprehension? In word problems? The more specific you are, the faster you can fix it.

Step 3: Make it short and consistent. 20 minutes a day beats 2 hours on Saturday. Every time.

Step 4: Check in early. If you’re not seeing any movement by Day 7, something needs to change. Don’t wait 3 months to find out.

Things that won’t help your child catch up:

I want to tell you something about kids who “hate reading.”

They don’t hate reading. They hate reading about things they don’t care about.

Think about it. Your 4th grader won’t touch the assigned chapter book, but she’ll spend an hour reading about horses on her own. Your 6th grader groans at the reading packet, but he reads every Minecraft wiki page he can find.

The skill is the same. The interest makes it stick. 🎯
