The American Academy of Ophthalmology's Minority Ophthalmology Mentoring (MOM) program is dedicated to helping students reach their career goals and to become competitive ophthalmology residency applicants. Students who are accepted into the program are matched with an ophthalmologist mentor who provides valuable support for medical career planning and decision-making. In 2016, the UT Southwestern LMSA Chapter organized the first celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in the institution's history. This month-long celebration includes rich art performances, workshops centered around Latino health, and discussions on cultural awareness and competency. The Hispanic Heritage Month celebration has become a tradition at UT Southwestern, and has hosted many inspiring community leaders who are doing great things for the health and education of the Latino community.
LMSA's 2015-2016 co-president Stephanie Florez-Pollack was an invited speaker to this year's celebration, where she shared LMSA's mission and accomplishments with the institution's highest leaders.

Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month event showcases vibrant leaders: Center Times - UT Southwestern, Dallas, Texas Storytelling, history, and inspiration took center stage Oct. 15 inside UT Southwestern’s Excellence in Education Auditorium, as more than 100 members of the campus community gathered to celebrate Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month.

Brian Williams, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. After six years as an aeronautical engineer in the U.S. Air Force, he pursued a career in medicine and is now a surgeon caring for trauma patients at Parkland Hospital, our primary teaching facility.
