Making the first $100,000 was a straight up hustle and many sleepless nights.

There is no magical blueprint you can follow step by step to reach your goal, especially as an armature entrepreneur with no money or networks you can leverage.

You just fu***ng eat dirt and push until you feel like you can’t push anymore then push some more.

In my case, I provided a ton of free design service to the right people in the startup community in Dallas to earn their trust, and these relationships and partnerships I built led to bigger opportunities and paying contract jobs that allowed me to fund my passion project.

Throwback Thursday — When I was working on Blownaway, an on-demand hair & makeup service app in Dallas, I conducted a competitive analysis and discovered an opportunity — none of the competitors in the on-demand beauty category was telling a “story”.

When you pay more for Victoria Secret underwear, Prada shoes, and Chanel handbags, you are not necessarily paying for better quality — you are paying for the “stories” they are selling, or fantasies you get to have when you own their products.

While this is a known branding tactic in all fashion and beauty categories, it was missing from the on-demand beauty category. All of the competitors were selling hair and makeup styles like some products on a shelf at Walmart with pictures of naked models with various hair and makeup styles against a plain white or black background.

So I worked with stylists to put together 7 distinct looks with 7 unique stories that would allow our customers to fantasize.

But when I pitched the idea to the CEO, the company was on a tight budget, so he didn’t feel comfortable spending $10K on a new photo shoot.

So I decided to put my money where my mouth is — and paid for the photo shoot out of my pocket. I told the CEO, he could pay me for the photos later only if it brings results.

Long story short, we got the new photos for the app, I got paid, and the company raised over $1M total in funding ☺️
