Consider this your reminder to complete that FAFSA!
Stop scrolling 😉 and read below for some free FAFSA tips that you need to know:
✔️ Complete the FAFSA anytime after October 1st of senior year in high school. Must complete before January 1 for priority filing according to FAFSA website but experts say it’s best to have it done by November 1. Loans are granted on a first come first serve basis.
✔️Some schools require a FAFSA for merit based funding.
✔️Be sure both the student and parent create a FAFSA ID. Create the student’s first.
✔️When completing the FAFSA, always start with on-campus housing. You can always switch to off-campus housing later, but this allows you to start with the largest amount of financial aid.
✔️Joint accounts between a student and a parent should be split 50/50 on the FAFSA form.
Still unsure? Send us a DM and we’d love to share some more tips with you to make this process easier!

The cost of college has increased in price far more than any other U.S. good or service.
WHY?
Because the borrowing is so easy.
So, simply put, college prices are so high because people are willing to spend more since it’s so easy to borrow.
Might as well, right?
(No!)
Let us help you jump out of the crazy cycle. We’d love the chance to meet your family!

Texas is one of 28 states to offer this to foster children and families! The student must enroll in a state supported college or university before their 25th birthday. It’s available for students who want to enroll in higher education or who want to take dual-credit courses at their high school.
To see qualifications you can visit the state’s website or reach out to us with questions!
According to a Texas Tribune article, this opportunity isn’t utilized very often. Possibly because families aren’t aware of it or a foster youth who ages out of the system is left without support to figure out the details of college: where to live, how to buy books, etc. even though tuition is paid for.
All the more reason to be by involved in and learn more about the foster care system to be an advocate + a support!

Your student is awarded a private scholarship. Great news, right? You may assume the award is IN ADDITION to the financial aid package that is being offered to your student by the college.
But, you may likely be wrong.
This is called “scholarship displacement” or some colleges call it “over-award” and it happens when the aid offered by the college is reduced when the student receives an additional outside private scholarship. Womp womp.
It seems counterintuitive. The GOOD NEWS is that you can advocate for yourself and there may be some strategies around it.
Keep this in mind when looking at colleges and know how each school approaches this practice.
