From the Executive Director...Mr. John Carter

Summer is behind us but the learning and fun that The 12 experienced, over the four-week session, will be before them as they utilize the information learned during our Summer of Choice program to better prepare themselves for college and becoming agents of change within their families and our community.

Again, I truly thank all of our donors who contribute to our cause which allows us to continue our deliver of quality programming and experiences that will benefit them for years to come.

More specifically, I commend Healthy Futures of Texas, Toast Masters and Benchmark Bank for serving as the facilitators that delivered invaluable content and information that will certainly shape the holistic development of each student. Kudos to Donald Carter, Yolanda Morgan-Davis, Courtney Gowans, Haley Carter-Hooper, Troya Howard, Cynthia Jones, Emma Rodgers and Beverly Talton for their roles to ensure that our program was a huge success; none of which was possible without the hospitality shown by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and its staff.

And to culminate our summer, three days of additional fun and bonding in Broken Bow Oklahoma was the perfect way to reflect and appreciate the past 25 years as an organization as we hosted our All-Class Reunion! Representation from all five classes (Class of '05, '11, '17, '23 and 2029) reunited and grew closer together to share many of their most memorable moments during this "empowering, educational experience for tomorrow's leaders" known as The Turner 12"!

On behalf of The 12, our Board of Directors and myself, thank you all for your commitment and please know that " together we do make THE difference"!

As we conclude the midpoint of our Summer of Choice program, The 12 have received invaluable information that lends itself to their holistic development.

Monday morning conversations have centered around responsible relational development with members from Healthy Futures of Texas as well as The 12 better understanding the progressive stages of their own physical and personal development. Toastmasters, with Joe Yoder and Ron Steiner, PhD, have delivered on Tuesdays encouraging tips and sound advice to our students on how to become effective public speakers and the confidence that comes along with achieving that goal overtime. Benchmark Bank employees continue their investment into The 12 on Wednesdays by sharing information on financial practices that will certainly pay off in their future as community leaders and possible financial planners. Group counseling sessions are conducted on Thursday mornings which affords The 12 the freedom to talk through and connect with professionals from Our Sisters Our Brothers Counseling and Consulting.
Our afternoon sessions have included the art of becoming proficient writers (Beverly Talton), the studies of African American history (Emma Rogers), lessons and exercises on how to "create the inevitable deep within" (Haley Carter-Hooper) and spirited team debates among themselves on topics that aren't easily argued!!!

I want to thank all of our donors who help to make our efforts possible as we strive to continue our delivery of quality programming and experiences to the students that we serve as they, in turn, prepare themselves to become "our leaders of tomorrow!"

Join us in congratulating our newest 'State Champion" Kamarri Brown as the Lady Lincoln Tigers Track team captured the University Interscholastic League 4A State Title.

Kamarri ran an impressive third leg on the team's 4X400 meter relay team as they finished third place; thus enabling them to secure the state championship which is something that the school had not achieved since 1997.

"Going into high school, I introduced myself as the next state champion of Lincoln," expressed Kamarri. " I imagined myself in Austin and over the months, I put in the work at school and at home to achieve my goal," she shared. :Seeing all my hard work come to pass has made me even more hungrier to win something even bigger. I have always told Coach Carter that becoming a state champion was never a goal but a destination because I always knew where I was headed," the state champion concluded.

Congratulations Kamarri!!! Remember: Whatever you will vividly imagine...whatever you will sincerely believe...whatever you will ardently desire....whatever you will enthusiastically act upon....Will inevitably come to pass!!! We are so very proud of you!

Join us in saluting our own Cadet Sgt. 1st Class Jaydi Carranza as she was recently recognized by the National Sojourners. The honor was bestowed upon her for "her patriotism and support of the United States through the Reserve Officers Training Crops," according to her mentor and Retired Sgt. 1st Class Katrina Andrews.
