Good morning,

Today is the first day that businesses can apply for the SBA Guaranteed PPP Loans which are intended to keep employees
paid at least through June 30, 2020. This act is important for businesses as well as the employees who work for those businesses.

The PPP Loans must be applied for through banks that are authorized to make SBA Loans. Some banks are not ready to
accept PPP loan applications. Some banks are deciding not to participate because of uncertainty in the SBA rules which were not available.

The SBA issued interim final rules late last night. This was what many banks were waiting for to answer questions that they had based on
verbal statements from the SBA through this week leading up today, April 3rd. The banks were hearing many rumors which concerned them
including that the PPP loans would not be 100% guaranteed by the SBA. Another concerns was the low interest rate of 1/2% which was below the cost of funds for many banks.

The interim final rules confirmed a 1% interest rate and 100% SBA guarantee and no lender liability for verifying borrower's records and representations.
There will still be banks that will pass on making PPP Loans but the uncertainty in the rules should be removed by the SBA's issuance of interim final rules late last night.

If your bank doesn't participate, you can go to another bank. Most banks are following the principal of handling their customers first.
The PPP loans are first come, first served and are expected to go quickly. You may be shut out if your bank doesn't participate.

ProConnect (which is part of my ACCT 6388 - Accounting Communications course) offers students an opportunity to be a consultant and do some of the functions of a new accountant (research / performing work all the way up to partner (client engagement letter, client relationship building, and closing meetings). I have seen such transformations in students from this course. This can be in the way of increased confidence, ability to handle nebulous situations better, or researching challenges a client has.

Everyone can benefit from a mentor. I try to be that mentor to students in this class. Why? Because I have had excellent mentors in my life. One of those was Jim Friedberg. Not only was he a mentor to me, he helped many UTD students challenge themselves in the hard parts of soft skills development. Before Jim would work with a student one on one, he would ask them "Will you do everything I ask you to do even if it is hard?" If the student didn't do what he asked him to do, he knew he could not be successful with them.

The Jim Friedberg ProConnect Opportunity Fund, which is my passion for today for Giving Day 2019 strives to raise money to support the initiative. We have had over 995 students do 224 different projects since we started in Summer 2015. Today I would like to ask you to spread the word about this great program to people who may want to support this vision.
