What a fantastic event by Literacy Texas! The UTA Department of Linguistics and TESOL was delighted to host this non-profit’s DFW regional symposium on Friday. Literacy Texas conferences are always first class! The new Executive Director Dr. Jenny Walker gave an inspiring keynote, and I especially enjoyed the opportunity to network with leaders from local community-based organizations.

I enjoyed presenting at the MiTESOL conference today on behalf of Cambridge University Press & Assessment! It was a beautiful fall day at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This was my first time visiting Michigan, and it is so charming. Loved being amongst such a dedicated group of TESOLers!

Enjoyed connecting with colleagues and friends at the DFW Metroplex Linguistics Conference today! Dr. Peggy Semingson and I presented a poster about the many virtual/online options available for TESOL students to complete internship, practicum, and/or service learning requirements.

With the new year underway, we’re excited to announce more of our new faculty! It’s a pleasure to share that Dr. Katie Welch has joined us this fall as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction in TESOL and the Interim Director of our English Language Institute program. Katie earned her PhD from UTA (2009 Ph.D. in Linguistics). She has extensive experience with TexTESOL, serving eight years on their board--as President, Treasurer, and State Conference Chair, and this year winning the 2024 TexTESOLer of the Year. She has international experience working with pre-service and in-service teachers through presentations at TESOL International, giving a keynote for Kuwait TESOL, and as a US Department of State English Language Specialist in Poland and in Türkiye. In addition, she has published articles on teaching language and linguistics in the journals Language and American Speech. Welcome back to UTA, Katie!

The invisible emotional labor of teaching can be so intense, make sure you set good boundaries to reduce the likelihood of burnout!
A sketchnote commissioned me to create for .
Dr Katie Welch shared some brilliant ways to promote teacher wellbeing.
How do you take care of yourself?
I'm terrible at taking breaks, but I have taken her advice on setting boundaries.
