Back to School can be rough on young kids, especially those experiencing school for the first time. As a speech pathologist who gives her clients the week of school off from therapy, I’m giving you 5️⃣ words to help you navigate those first weeks of school. Homeschool mamas, these apply to you too!!!

Just stop SCHEDULING all the things!! Your 6 year old missing soccer practice is not going to make or break his/her Division One scholarship 😉. For your sanity, create some down time afterschool!

Unless you’re happy with the answer being “I don’t know” or nothing, keep asking that broad (and loaded) question! We’ll unpack this a little later!

GRACE!!! All of it!! Homeschool or not, find your grace mama!

Give ‘em something to talk about! Something to look forward to!!

Deep breathing does a world of good for everyone involved. In through the nose, out through the mouth…breathe!!

We’ve been celebrating SUMMERWEEN for the past two weeks 🎃

This book is adorable! You can be whatever you want to be….if you want to be a pumpkin, BE A PUMPKIN! Then we created our own watermelon jack o lantern. 😍

I started a new theme this summer…SUMMERWEEN!! I was not ready to start our back to school activities yet. But Halloween in the summer I am here for 👏👻

This is new to the Speech Chick library. It is actually the reason for Summerween! It’s the story a of little girl’s pumpkin patch. It turns out her favorite pumpkin was actually a watermelon!!

My daughter and I spent a girls day shopping at Dallas bookstores Saturday. Currently for the entire month of August, there is an indie bookstore crawl taking you to over 30 bookstores in the DFW area. Even though I was celebrating Romance Bookstore Day, I had to check out picture books! These books caught my eye. One did make it home though!

Picture books are my weakness. I love books that have a message. I love books with beautiful illustrations or fun characters. Books are great for working on articulation, grammar, answering questions, recalling details, sequencing and predicting… just name a few targets for speech therapy. They’re conversation starters and allow kids to think outside the box. You will never convince using picture books in speech therapy is a negative thing!

If you’re around any length of time, you will learn I LOVE BOOKS! Bookstores, bookmarks, book goodies, snacks to go with my books… you get the idea. Mostly I share picture books I use in speech therapy.
