The big takeaway? Start local. Your fire department or the IA firms you want to work with may be the best place to begin.

Can you do insurance claims adjusting part-time?
Yes.
But it’s not the kind of side hustle most people think it is.
Part-time adjusting is real, but it usually means being licensed, flexible, and ready to take opportunities when they come.
A few quick truths:
“Part-time” often means seasonal or as-needed
Some roles are a better fit than others
The income can be solid, but it’s not always predictable
It works best for self-starters with realistic expectations

Getting started as an adjuster? Here’s the most important thing to know before you buy a course or apply for a license:
If you live in a licensing state, you should usually start with your resident state license first — not Texas or Florida.
We’re hearing lately from people who were told by AI that a Texas or Florida license is the “best first license,” or that they are “multi-state” licenses that let you work everywhere. That’s causing a lot of confusion, delays, and unnecessary expense.
The truth:
If your state licenses adjusters, start with your home state license
If your state does not license adjusters, then a Designated Home State (DHS) license may be the right next step, often through Texas or Florida
Starting with the wrong license can mean extra fees, extra exams, and having to start over.

What Certifications Do Independent Adjusting Firms Look For?
Many adjusters assume that once they're licensed, they're ready to work claims. But staffing departments often prioritize adjusters who already have specific certifications, estimating software training, and carrier approvals.
We contacted an IA firm directly to find out what they're actively seeking heading into the 2026 wind and hail season (March 1–September 1). Here's what they shared:
Restoration & Damage Assessment
IICRC – Water, fire, smoke, mold, and restoration knowledge
HAAG Training – Roof inspections and storm damage identification
Rope & Harness Safety – Safe roof access and fall protection
State & Program-Specific
CEA Certification – California earthquake claims
Louisiana Citizens Certification – State-backed insurance program
Mississippi Windstorm (MWUA) – Coastal MS coverage
TWIA Certification – Texas coastal wind and hail claims
Flood
NFIP/FEMA FCN Card – Required to handle any federal flood claims. Without it, you're locked out of flood work in LA, TX, FL, and beyond.
Estimating Software
Xactimate – The industry standard for property claims
Symbility/CoreLogic – Used by some carriers instead of Xactimate
CCC ONE – Essential for auto physical damage claims
Carrier-Specific
State Farm – Estimatics, Policy, and Auto certifications
NICTA – Required by carriers like Nationwide for fraud investigation training
Bonus Certifications That Expand Opportunities
FAA Part 107 – Drone inspections for roofs and hard-to-access structures
Spanish Language Certification – High value in many key markets
Adjusters with these certifications are often the first ones called when claims volume spikes. If you're looking to get on more IA firm rosters, start by identifying which of these you're missing, then close the gap before storm season hits.
AdjusterPro has helped more than 100,000 students prepare for their adjuster licenses, and we're here to help with what comes next, too.
