🎒 Back-to-School Money Challenge – Day 3: Don't Shop Harder...Shop Smarter! 🛍️

You've done the hard work.

✅ You created a budget.
✅ You researched prices.
✅ You know what you need.

Now it's time to put your plan into action.

One mistake many families make is trying to get everything done in one trip or buying everything from one store because it's convenient. While that may save a little time, it doesn't always save money.

Smart shoppers know where they'll find the best value before they ever leave the house.

Talk with your kids about questions like:

🛒 Which store has the best deals on school supplies?

💻 Which items are less expensive online?

🚗 Is driving across town really worth it after factoring in gas and time?

📅 Are there back-to-school sales or tax-free weekends that could save even more?

The goal isn't to visit the most stores—it's to make the smartest use of both your time and your money.

🎯 Today's Lab Challenge:

Before you head out, create your shopping game plan together.

✔️ Decide which stores you'll visit.
✔️ Decide which items you'll buy at each stop.
✔️ Decide what you'll order online.

A little planning today can save money, reduce stress, and make shopping a whole lot easier.

Tomorrow, we'll put those plans into action and start making smart buying decisions!

🎒 Back-to-School Money Challenge – Day 2: Find the Best Value! 💰

Yesterday, we created a budget.

Today, it's time to make that budget work as hard as possible.

One of the biggest money lessons kids can learn is this:

The cheapest option isn't always the best value...and the most expensive option isn't always the best either.

A $5 t-shirt may seem like a bargain, but if it shrinks, fades, or falls apart after a few washes, was it really a good deal?

On the other hand, paying extra just because something has a popular brand name doesn't always make sense either. Sometimes you're paying for quality...and sometimes you're simply paying for the logo.

This is a great opportunity to involve your kids in the decision-making process.

Before you buy, compare your options together.

🛒 Check prices online.
🛒 Compare different stores.
🛒 Watch for back-to-school sales.
🛒 Read reviews.
🛒 Decide which items are worth spending a little more on and where you can save.

You might discover that one store has the best price on notebooks, another has the best backpack sale, and an online retailer has the best deal on shoes.

That's exactly how smart shoppers think.

🎯 Today's Lab Challenge:
Choose one item from your school shopping list and compare it at three different stores or websites. Talk about which option gives you the best value, not just the lowest price.

Every dollar you save today is another dollar you can use somewhere else tomorrow.

🎒 Back-to-School Money Challenge – Day 1: Build the Budget Before You Buy! 💰

Before you ever step foot in a store or click "Add to Cart," there's one thing every smart shopper should do...

Make a plan.

Today isn't about buying school supplies. It's about creating a budget and deciding where your money needs to go.

👧 For younger kids (ages 5–10):
Give them a budget for one category—maybe school supplies, a backpack, or lunch items.

👦 For older kids and teens:
Challenge them to help create the budget for the entire back-to-school shopping trip.

Before assigning those dollars, spend a few minutes doing some research together.

✅ Look through last year's supplies.

Are there notebooks with unused pages?
Do the scissors still work?
Does the backpack still have another year left?
Are there crayons, markers, or pencils that can be reused?

Every item you don't have to replace helps your budget stretch a little farther.

This is also a great opportunity to talk about taking care of the things we own. When kids understand that keeping their belongings in good condition saves money, they're more likely to treat them with care.

Today's goal isn't to spend money.

It's to create a plan for spending it wisely.

📚 Today's Challenge:
Sit down together and decide how much money will be available for back-to-school shopping. Then decide how you want to divide that budget into categories before anyone starts shopping.

Tomorrow we'll look at how to make that budget work even harder!

🤔💰 Every choice has a cost... even when it doesn't feel like it.

It's called Opportunity Cost.

When you spend money on one thing, you're giving up the chance to use that money for something else.

🎮 Buy the video game?
You might have to wait longer for the bike.

🍿 Buy snacks and treats?
That's money that can't go toward a bigger goal.

The goal isn't to never spend money.

The goal is to make spending decisions on purpose.

When kids learn to ask:
👉 "What am I giving up by choosing this?"
they start making smarter money decisions for life.

At Kidz Money Lab, we're helping kids learn that every dollar has a job—and every choice has a trade-off.

👇 What's something you wish you had saved for instead of spending money on when you were younger?

⏰💰 Most people think building wealth is all about investing MORE money.

But what if the real secret is investing EARLIER?

In this example, both people invest the exact same amount of money.

One starts early and invests a smaller amount each month.
The other starts later and invests a much larger amount each month.

The result?

🚀 The early investor ends up with dramatically more money.

Why?

Because compound interest needs TIME to work its magic.

This is one of the most important money lessons kids can learn:
🌱 Start early.
📈 Stay consistent.
⏰ Let time do the heavy lifting.

At Kidz Money Lab, we're helping parents teach real-life money skills that can impact a child's future for decades to come.

👇 Which would you rather have: more money to invest or more time for your money to grow?
