Start the school year off strong with a free download of our Checklist: Creating A Safe and Caring School, and help students, families, and staff feel secure, valued, and connected.
A sense of safety and belonging in the school community provides a foundation for attendance and engagement. Being an intentionally inclusive school community promotes access to supports that students and families need and can reduce student risk in areas like absenteeism and school violence.
Four essential components of creating a Safe and Caring School, include:
โ
Building connections and caring relationships
โ
Implementing practices that promote a predictable and fair environment
โ
Approaching behaviors with understanding and respect
โ
Encouraging students to act in safe and caring ways

One of the largest risk-factors for school violence is bullying. This includes students who engage in bullying, victims of bullying, and bystanders. Reducing bullying in schools significantly reduces acts of violence. It is imperative that students understand bullying, can talk about it, and know how to avoid or respond to it.
Behavioral Skills Training is an evidence-based method that can be used to teach a variety of skills including prevention of violence and bullying, pro-active wellness skills, and communication skills. This includes 4 phases of intervention and is simple and easy to learn:
โ Instruction:
Teach students the skills and knowledge that they need to know. This includes developing a common language to facilitate productive and safe conversations about each topic.
โ Model:
Show students what to do. This can include showing videos of how to respond in different situations or having a student demonstrate what to do.
โ Rehearsal:
Engage students in role-playing or discussing different scenarios. Teach them to identify potential consequences for different actions and to make better choices when faced with difficult situations.
โ Feedback:
Give students frequent feedback on their actions including praising positive and pro-social behaviors. Also, help students develop solutions for making better choices when they engage in inappropriate behaviors.

In these turbulent times, creating a safe and caring classroom is on every educatorโs mind, and many are wondering how to reduce isolation and build community right at the beginning of the year. We know that when students feel like they are an important member of a classroom community, they are more likely to be able to learn, and less likely to engage in challenging behaviors.
This is why weโve developed a Wellness Curriculum that goes above and beyond creating safe and caring classrooms to support teachers in building their classroom communities. Itโs filled with easy-to-use activities to engage learners, spark meaningful discussions, and foster intentional collaboration and positive problem-solving.
Help your educators start their year with compassion and community with these complimentary practical resources from our K-12 Wellness Curriculum:

Set the school year up for success by setting and teaching classroom expectations, which can help educators increase consistency and reduce time spent on correcting behaviors.
โ Classroom management practices are core instructional behavioral supports necessary for all students and include setting and teaching expectations and classroom agreements.
โ Classroom expectations are broad behavioral standards used to guide the teaching and practice of behaviors that support learning, engagement and positive social interactions.
โ Common school and classroom expectations may include value-driven terms such as: integrity, self-awareness, safety, service, respect, and responsibility.
โ Classroom agreements, or rules, are used to explicitly teach students what the expectations look like and how they can meet the expectations.
A consistent and meaningful system of agreements provides structure for students and helps them to engage with instructional tasks and demonstrate appropriate social behaviors.
