Over the last week members were tasked with a worst case scenario. Firefighter trapped in a collapse, injured and unable to self extricate. Members acted as a RIT group moving through a simulated collapsed area testing mental and physical preparedness.

Pistol grips exist to bandaid a systemic problem in the fire service, loss of fundamental skills due to mission creep. Claimed to make hose handling easier and safer, they do the opposite.

Hose handling and nozzle techniques are a lost art. This firefighter is working harder than he has to, because he is absorbing the nozzle reaction rather than transferring it to the ground. His extinguishment effectiveness is extremely limited by his technique. In order to redirect the stream left or right he has to twist his body. But hey, “ain’t nothing to handling that hose kid, anyone can do it, the fire always goes out” 🙄
