FRUSTRATED READERS
Students who are at risk for reading failure are all too familiar with feelings of frustration when attempting reading related tasks at school. In order to become better readers they need to learn basic fundamental reading skills, practicing them until the skills have been internalized. At Grow thru Tutoring we work with students who are having difficulty internalizing these skills to the necessary level of mastery for proficient reading. Skills are taught in small integrated steps with quick paced practice items to promote a feeling of success. As word recognition skills are mastered we incorporate the steps needed to further develop reading fluency and language comprehension abilities, carefully supporting the reader at every step. We at Grow thru Tutoring take the frustration out of reading and put back back in feelings of accomplishment and enjoyment. We have been working with students from kindergarten through fifth grade for over 20 years to become successful readers by helping them develop overall better reading abilities and develop a growing anticipation for reading in general.

My Child Doesn't Want to Read! Is it worth the effort?
Vocabulary development is a reading predictor for your child's success in the upper grades. Research studies indicate that children do not get enough exposure to new vocabulary words through watching TV or even in general conversation with family and friends. It is through reading that children can be introduced to 50% or more new vocabulary words and in a context that promotes understanding. Is it worth the effort? Yes it is! Creating an enjoyable reading environment at home, developing an appreciation of books and stimulating your child's imagination through the written word is your goal, vocabulary development will follow. If you want ideas, if you are worried your child may have an underlying learning problem that may be causing a disinterest in reading, contact us at growthrututoring.com, we can help.

My Child Can Read, But Are They Comprehending?
Parents often bring their children to me, typically 4th, 5th graders, saying their child can read, but can’t seem to recall what was read or are unable to accurately answer comprehension questions over what was read. At Grow thru Tutoring we recognize and teach the components of reading, Phonemic Awareness, Letter-Sound Correspondences, Word Recognition and Spelling, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension Strategies, with the understanding that each is essential for successful reading. Often what is thought to be a comprehension problem may be masking a phonemic awareness or word recognition weakness, thus impacting fluency which is necessary for good comprehension. So, when a parent contacts us expressing a concern about their child’s reading comprehension, we assess their full reading foundation, leaving no letter unturned. 📚

A typical lesson in SRA Early Interventions in Learning includes activities designed to do the following: promote phonemic awareness, provide practice sounding out decodable words composed of previously taught letter-sound correspondences, teach spelling strategies, help students develop automatic recognition of words that do not conform to alphabetic rules, and give students the opportunity to read and reread connected text composed of decodable and sight words while applying simple, effective comprehension strategies. Level Two focuses on building vocabulary and comprehension skills while maintaining and supporting fluency growth.

Our approach at Grow thru Tutoring ensures that children make fewer errors while learning, giving them the maximum opportunity to succeed. Our teachers model each skill before requiring the student to perform the skill being taught. Activities are performed in unison first as needed, and then always individually, until the student demonstrates ownership over the skill. This is very motivating for young learners.

Children at risk for reading failure benefit from specific systematic reading instruction that does not confuse letter sounds with their letter names. To read and spell children need to learn the sounds letters make, not their names.

I recently reviewed the initial assessments for one of my students. When she came to me she was in third grade and a struggling reader. Looking at her spelling assessment, she'd spelled the word “help” as “hlep”, confusing the sound and letter name. This was a common pattern that disrupted both her spelling and reading.

Clearly, most children can become proficient readers regardless of the order in which the letter names and letter sounds are introduced. But not all beginning readers are alike.

Parents often have asked the question, “Should my child learn their letter names or letter sounds first in order to become a good reader?” One approach teaches letter names early on and then when the child is ready to read, teaches the sounds of the letters. A second approach teaches letter names and their letter sounds simultaneously. Another approach teaches letter sounds first. Which makes more sense? And how does this impact a student’s ability to spell accurately? We’d like to hear from our readers. What are your thoughts on this subject?

Once a letter-sound has been introduced, we review it frequently. We display previously Introduced letter-sounds altogether and point to each one for the student to read. Letter-sound dictation is an additional review method, hear the sound, write the sound and say it while you are writing it. We do this throughout the reading intervention lessons to continuously reinforce all letter-sounds. Students are then able to sound out words both accurately and faster, leading to successful reading.
