✨Saturday studies... Let's review some dermatitis!✨

1️⃣Atopic dermatitis:
▪️AKA eczema
▪️This is the MOST COMMON type of dermatitis
▪️ Typically starts in childhood, but can progress into adulthood
▪️Characteristics ➡️ itchy, red or brown patches on the skin, more prominently on the flexor surfaces such as the hands, elbows, knees, etc.
▪️ Treatment ➡️️ Moisturizers and topical corticosteroids

2️⃣Contact dermatitis:
▪️ Caused by direct contact with something
▪️Characteristics ➡️ causes a red, itchy rash, or imprint
▪️Treatment ➡️ Remove irritant(s), topical corticosteroids, and or antihistamines

✨Let's review the PHQ-2! ✨
This is a depression screening that can be helpful to assess those with depressed thoughts or loss of interest in activities.

▪️ It is a 2 question survey - based on the results, you can then move into a more in-depth survey by using the PHQ-9!

Over the last 2 weeks:
1️⃣ Do you have little interest or pleasure in doing things?
2️⃣ Do you feel down, depressed, or hopeless?

Sometimes this is a lot easier for a patient to fill this out versus have a conversation about this topic! Remember as clinicians, to use therapeutic communication and continue to assess their symptoms and risks to further evaulate their situation and diagnosis to come up with the treatment plan.

▪️ A score of 3 or greater is a positive screening and warrants further evaluation
▪️ Proceed onto the PHQ-9 screening tool

▪️Antibiotics such as vancomycin, rifampin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole
▪️Surgery (I&D of the wound or removing infected hardware)
▪️Hand washing 👏
▪️Disinfecting surfaces

DID YOU KNOW
This infection is commonly mistaken for a spider bite! When a patient tells you that they think they may have a spider bite- ask them "did you see the spider bite you?"

Time for a review! Here are the key takeaways you will want to know regarding diabetes for your upcoming AANP or ANCC exam!👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

➡️Type I diabetes:
▪️ An autoimmune disorder where the body DESTROYS insulin producing cells
▪️ NOT preventable
▪️ More common in childhood ("juvenile diabetes"), however it can occur at any age
▪️ Accounts for 10% of cases
▪️ Treatment requires lifelong injections (continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps)
▪️ Refer and work with endocrinology and a dietician

➡️Type II diabetes:
▪️Insulin resistance or insulin deficiency
▪️Preventable
▪️ Accounts for 90% of cases
▪️ Treated with lifestyle modifications and or a variety of medications- such as biguanides, sulfonylureas, SGLT-2 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonists, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors

And as clinicians, it is important to be able to recognize these signs and symptoms and how to properly diagnose!

🔍Signs and Symptoms:
▪️ Increased urination, thirst, and hunger are big clues
▪️ Slow healing wounds or thrush common
▪️ Fatigue
▪️ Blurred vision ... to name a few!

✅Diagnostics:
These are important for you to know for your upcoming exam as well as for practice!
▪️Hemoglobin A1C
▪️Fasting glucose
▪️2-hour plasma glucose
▪️Non-fasting glucose

Myasthenia gravis:
➡️chronic neuromuscular disease that weakens voluntary movements

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️Assessment:
▪️Drooping of the eyelids
▪️Double vision (diplopia)
▪️Trouble speaking or chewing
▪️Muscle weakness
▪️IMPROVES with REST

🔍Diagnosis:
▪️Acetylcholine receptor antibodies
▪️Genetic testing
▪️Nerve conduction studies
▪️Electromyogram (EMG)

💊Treatment:
▪️Reduce triggers
▪️Cholinesterase inhibitors
▪️Steroids
▪️Immunosuppressants
▪️Surgery

Crimes:
❗Most commonly caused by eating raw or undercooked poultry
❗An estimated 1.5 million people in the United States have this every year

🚓Signature MO's:
▪️ Diarrhea ➡️ causes campylobacteriosis
▪️ Can lead to irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, even nerve damage
▪️ More common in the summer than winter months

🚨 Culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs)
