DeSoto ISD sent this email out today to the staff.

Linda Murphree
Retired DeSoto ISD Teacher, Counselor and Cheer Sponsor

With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a longtime educator in the DeSoto Independent School District, Linda Murphree.
She graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia in 1970 with a degree in math and education, and quickly begin her career as a junior high mathematics teacher at the Belt Line School in DeSoto, Texas.
In 1975, she moved to DeSoto High School to teach math while obtaining her Master’s degree in counseling.

Two years, later she left the classroom to become a counselor and made a notable impact.
She helped many DeSoto students with college admissions, class scheduling, and ensured students were on the path to getting their high school diplomas.
During her recent nomination for the district’s prestigious Hall of Honor, it was shared that many students over the years have said, “If it were not for Miss Murphree, I would have never graduated!”
In 1977, Ms. Murphree became the cheerleader sponsor, a role that she held for many years, well into the 1990s.
She was seen at cheerleader camps, competitions and uniform fittings, as well as sewing uniforms for her girls.
She even drove the cheerleaders to many football games, basketball games, and baseball games.
Murphree was deeply loved and often noted as one who gives selflessly of her time and love.

She also survived breast cancer in 1997, began volunteering and working with Susan G. Komen for a few years.
But, her work with DeSoto ISD was not done. She became a counselor with DeSoto ISD again with the newly established WINGS program
and helped students who had dropped out of school but wanted to come back and earn their high school diplomas.

She officially retired from the district in 2016, but her love and impact is still evident throughout the district and community in her many friends and former DeSoto ISD students.
With all of her time spent serving children, she managed to travel to all 50 US states, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and Africa.

She will be deeply missed.

Ramona, please share this with the people in DeSoto. Before moving, Linda prepared an Advanced Directive. She chose not to be kept alive by machines. The medical staff and her family are honoring her wishes. The doctors have reported no brain activity. They do not have a definitive cause but believe the infected toe is an important piece of the puzzle.

This was very sudden and unlike a heart attack or cancer, we do not have a definitive cause, which makes it difficult for us to accept as humans. She is resting peacefully and receiving medical care from Hospice staff and Methodist Hospital staff. i believe it is the best medical care possible.

Before the equipment was removed, Ryan Rush, our pastor visited Linda. Not only did he pray a healing prayer, but he held her hand while he sang two hymns for her. Then the hospital Chaplain offered a very comforting prayer. We have been blessed in so many ways. Your prayers are being answered.

I believe God has a plan for Linda. I wish it was a different plan, but I know that she is in His hands. Please continue to lift her up as we wait for God to take her home.

Thank you for your prayers.
Flora and Mark
