People are often shocked to hear that Socialization is one of my main reasons FOR homeschooling! If I could explain why my homeschoolers have such advanced social skills, this is it – Social Diversity. My homeschoolers interact with older kids, younger kids, adults in their 20s, adults in their 90s. They socialize with people with different backgrounds, worldviews, and ethnicities. We seem to think as a society, that the only “real” socialization occurs when a child’s surrounded by kids his/her own age. Sure that’s important, but you also want to learn social cues from adults who have fully developed and refined social skills.

When you’re exposed to a diverse spectrum of people, you develop a more well-rounded and sophisticated Social IQ. Learning to gauge people’s emotions, and pick up on social cues, will come easier and easier the more diverse your social experiences are. I thank God that my homeschoolers are free explore their world and get that crucial experience. What do you think?

The Homeschool Revolution

Classes – The Homeschool Revolution Mr. Austin homeschooled 2nd-12th grade, attended Harding U on a Full Academic Scholarship, and is the founder of The Homeschool Revolution.

“What is your daily routine?” I get asked this question a ton!

First things first, we have a set bedtime and “wake” time. Lights out at 9:30 PM and wake up at 7AM!

During breakfast, I have the speakers blasting our memory passage for the month.

At 8AM everyone check’s their schedules and starts working through their books. I have weekly schedules printed for each student. We use the Sonlight curriculum.

This next part is key - we had not one, but two recess periods a day! First recess is at 10AM and the next recess is after lunch at 1 PM. I believe that when your kiddos get lots of exercise, there’s much less behavior issues, and they focus better on their studies.

When the kids were younger, we had reading on the couch every day at 11am. I would read history, science, a novel, or a current event.

Once the kids got older, they did their own assigned reading at 11AM (we put reading after recess for a reason. It’s not fun sitting still with a book if you’ve got lots of energy pent-up haha)

We kept the afternoon flexible for extra-curriculars and play-dates with friends.

Every family must find what routine works best for them. We found that structure and organization worked well for us.

If you could sum up the power of homeschooling into one, beautiful word - it’s FREEDOM. Freedom to study what you want, when you want, where you want, how you want, and with whom you want.

Companies all over the world discovered (out of necessity) that their workers were just as productive (often more productive) working from home! If home-working works so beautifully, why not home-schooling?

What does it take to be “Socialized”? Some people seem to think socialization only happens when a child is surrounded by 100+ kids at school each day. But is that really true? Kids are still figuring out their world, learning social cues, and even finding their own personality. When there’s this massive, ever-changing social scene with more stimuli than any adult could take in, much less a child - it’s overwhelming. It’s no surprise so many children have social anxiety.

Homeschoolers can pick and choose social circles that are beneficial, and get small doses of positive socialization that kids can actually process, learn from, and adjust to. If your homeschoolers get just an hour a day with friends through activities, play-dates, etc you are giving your child a healthy amount of social time. That’s my humble, unprofessional opinion
