DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE BURNED OUT?

I have a very full fall and winter schedule ahead—meetings, flights, speaking engagements, leadership responsibilities, and running a business.

So I’m paying attention to my pace before my body forces me to.

Three burnout warning signs I watch for:

1. Getting sick more often than usual. Your body will sometimes tell you to slow down before your calendar does.
2. Becoming easily irritated or overwhelmed. Things that normally wouldn’t bother you suddenly feel heavy.
3. Feeling exhausted even after you’ve rested. You’re sleeping, but you’re not recovering.

There’s burnout prevention, and then there’s burnout management. I’d rather be intentional about prevention.

For me, that looks like:

• Spending time with God first thing in the morning before I give my energy to everyone else.
• Exercising before I start working.
• Limiting my screen time to 5 hours a day.
• Setting boundaries around calls—I’m not taking certain calls after 8 PM.
• Being intentional about what I eat: more vegetables, plenty of water, and my vitamins.
• Taking intentional breaks and managing the pace of meetings, travel, and work.

Because I’ve learned something from climbing mountains:

You cannot sprint your way up a mountain.

Sometimes you have to slow down so you can keep going.

Don’t confuse pace for potential.

Your job deserves your best—but it does not deserve your life.

One of my favorite prayers is the Serenity Prayer:

ā€œGod, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.ā€

In our workshops, we take an Educator Oath—a vow to remain resilient in uncertain times.

A vow to keep going through policy changes.
A vow to remain grounded after disappointing experiences with colleagues or parents.
A vow to change what we can, release what we cannot, and never lose sight of why we started.

Resilience doesn’t mean pretending the work isn’t heavy. It means knowing when to pause, when to push, and when to lean on others.

Educators, what is one thing you’re choosing to release—and one thing you’re committed to changing?

This is what Lean on Others looks like in action. ā›°ļø

During our Mind Over MountainsĀ® workshops, we create a human chain and play a little game of ā€œTia Saysā€ instead of Simon Says. šŸ˜

But there’s a bigger lesson behind the fun.

The goal is to learn how to communicate effectively—even under stress, even when people are pulling in different directions.

Because that’s what happens in schools every day.

Different roles. Different responsibilities. Different perspectives. But when everyone learns how to communicate, lean on one another, and move in the same direction toward the school’s mission, vision, and student success—that’s where we begin to see long-lasting change.

Greatness is a group effort.

You don’t build strong school culture by getting everyone to think the same.

You build it by teaching people how to move forward together. šŸ”ļø

TeamBuilding Resilience

Your teachers, your team, don’t want to let you down—so they may not even tell you they’re burned out.

This happened to me in real time today.

And I felt terrible realizing that, as a leader, I hadn’t created enough psychological safety for a member of my team to feel comfortable saying, ā€œI’m burned out.ā€

Instead, their actions—or lack thereof—started communicating what they weren’t saying.

Thankfully, we came together, had a transparent conversation, and created a plan together.

The result? More motivation. More clarity. And, most importantly, more trust.

Now there’s a level of trust where, should this happen again, my team member knows they can come to me BEFORE burnout starts showing up in their work.

That’s the thing about burnout.

Sometimes the drop in communication isn’t because people don’t care about their work.

Sometimes they care TOO much.

They’re afraid of letting the organization down.
Letting their students down.
Letting their families down.
Letting their communities down.

So they keep pushing—and stop communicating.

Leaders, don’t just ask, ā€œIs the work getting done?ā€ Ask, ā€œHow is the person doing the work?ā€

Burnout prevention starts with creating a culture where people feel safe enough to tell the truth BEFORE they reach their breaking point.

If you lead educators or teams, share this with another leader who needs the reminder.

Teenagers need to build their ā€œI’m gonna figure it outā€ muscle before Life hits them like a ton of bricks 🧱.

And no disrespect—but sometimes parents aren’t allowing them to build it. Your idea of protection or ā€œsupportingā€ them is crippling. And unfortunately their teachers feel this the most.

So they get to school, college, or the real world lacking problem-solving skills … critical thinking skills, because they haven’t had to practice them in everyday life.

Every teenager getting ready to graduate or step into independence—LOCK IN.

Social media fast.
Journal.
Learn to figure things out.
Build your own identity instead of constantly consuming what the world says you should be and who you are.

Independence requires practice.
