One of Primer’s primary goals is to build independent problem solvers and self-guided learners. We take kids very seriously and feed each of their individual passions daily to keep the passion for what they love most alive and fueled🔥🔥

This is the role of a school: not just to be a place where kids learn things, but to be a place where kids learn *how to learn*. Our goal is to create a habit within each child to take accountability for their own learning. What that means: every time your child is faced with a challenge, they go through a series of steps to get unstuck. Maybe that means asking themselves: Did I read the instructions? Am I using scratch paper? Did I watch the video? Can I review the practice problems? It’s a process by which kids use the resources they have available to them to figure something out on their own. Why does this matter? Because kids learn that they’re the ones responsible for getting their work done. More than that, they know HOW to get their work done. And this will fuel them no matter what challenges they face later on in their education, career, or life.

To keep kids from falling through cracks in the education system, every student needs to be known like never before. To know students, we need time — teachers need the chance to watch a student grow, learn how they learn, and build trust. That’s why we have students spend 3 years in the same classroom, rather than moving to a new classroom with a new teacher every year. To know students, we also need data — which is why we have students take the NWEA MAP test three times a year. This tells us where kids are at, academically, so we can make individualized learning plans that are just the right amount of challenge. And to know students, we need transparency — which is why we have the Primer OS, which makes it possible for teachers, parents, and students themselves to see where they’re at and what’s coming up next.

At a traditional school, students (eventually) get to take electives — and this might be the only time they get to explore their interests. But Primer kids get an entire time block every single day dedicated to pursuing their interests. Starting in kindergarten. For kids K-2, Primer Leaders get to know your kids and build projects from there. In grades 3-5 and 6-8, kids work on: 1. Studio Pursuits. This is a class-wide project, like putting on a play or taking a coding class. 2. Individual Pursuits. These are your child’s unique, keen interests. If your son is excited about becoming a DJ, he can pursue that. If your daughter is interested in vet medicine, she can dive into the first steps. Primer kids don’t wait until they’re a junior in high school to pursue their passions. Instead, they have time every day to prepare themselves for the future.

They get access to resources from all over the country—like taking an online AI course directly from a CEO. And they can create anything they dream up. Kids are naturally curious. Pursuits turns their curiosity into education.
