Let’s talk about a tool that is essential to student success: The Planner. We have plenty of students, that no matter what we say, are convinced that they will remember all of their homework and assignments without writing them down. This never works, and a disorganized student is a student that is not able to be at their best. Students in middle school typically move from having the same teacher for all subjects, to having 7 subjects and 7 teachers. This is a MAJOR shift, and can really be stressful. Disorganization with subjects, assignments, tests, and lockers quickly becomes overwhelming. One of the first things that we implement for a student who is disorganized are routine agenda checks. Through a collective effort, the student becomes responsible for getting their agenda signed by a teacher, confirming that they wrote the assignments down thoroughly and accurately. Once this is an established routine, then other habits can follow suit. An organized agenda is one of the first steps to success for any student that is struggling with the shift to a middle school mindset.
