🐍🐢 Little learners, big discoveries!

Critter Crew had a wonderful time visiting Todd's Friends Daycare and introducing the children to some of our amazing wildlife ambassadors! We love getting to share the wonders of the natural world, spark curiosity, and help little minds discover just how incredible the world around them can be. 💚

A special thank you to Heather and the entire staff for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to share our love of natural science with your little learners! 🐾

🐢🐍 Scales, shells, and LOTS of curiosity!

We had such a fun time today learning all about some of our favorite reptiles! The students got an up close look at turtles and snakes while discovering what makes these critters so special.

We even had our smallest Critter Crew fan hanging out with us today! 👶💚 It looks like we may have a future little wildlife enthusiast in the making!

A huge thank you to Lights Co-op at River Hills for inviting Critter Crew out to learn, discover, and get a little wild! 🐢💚

🔍 Nature is WILD! Walking stick bugs use incredible camouflage to blend right into the branches around them. Their twig like appearance helps them stay hidden from predators.

🌳 They can also intentionally drop a leg as a defense mechanism, which is the case with this critter considering he's missing a leg! If the bug is a juvenile, it can easily regrow the leg during the next molt. If the bug is an adult, it can live a happy life missing a leg. Nature is so cool!

🌿 Have you ever looked underneath a fern frond?

Those little dots you see are called sori! These tiny structures contain spore producing parts and play an important role in how ferns reproduce.🌱

Ferns are found all across Alabama, from forest and shaded trails to wetlands and rocky areas. So the next time you're exploring Albama's outdoors, flip over a fern frond and take a closer look! 🔍🌿

🐍 Meet the Southern Black Racer!

Fast? Absolutely. Dangerous? Not quite!

Southern black racers are nonvenomous snakes that play an important role in our ecosystems by helping control populations of rodents, frogs, lizards, and other small animals.

They are curious, alert, and VERY good at making a quick escape when they feel threatened. 🏃‍♂️💨

🦋Viceroy vs. Monarch!

🐛Did you know the Viceroy Butterfly closely resembles the Monarch Butterfly? This look-alike pattern helps protect it from predators—a fascinating example of mimicry!

🌿Unfortunately, both butterflies are affected by habitat loss. As native plants disappear, so do the places where butterflies lay their eggs and their caterpillars find food. Planting native species is one small way we can help these incredible pollinators thrive.
