๐Ÿ Meet the Southern Black Racer!

Fast? Absolutely. Dangerous? Not quite!

Southern black racers are nonvenomous snakes that play an important role in our ecosystems by helping control populations of rodents, frogs, lizards, and other small animals.

They are curious, alert, and VERY good at making a quick escape when they feel threatened. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ

๐Ÿฆ‹Viceroy vs. Monarch!

๐Ÿ›Did you know the Viceroy Butterfly closely resembles the Monarch Butterfly? This look-alike pattern helps protect it from predatorsโ€”a fascinating example of mimicry!

๐ŸŒฟUnfortunately, both butterflies are affected by habitat loss. As native plants disappear, so do the places where butterflies lay their eggs and their caterpillars find food. Planting native species is one small way we can help these incredible pollinators thrive.

Our russian tortoise has one job: don't disappear! ๐Ÿข

Today's adventure required one tiny accessory. ๐ŸŒผ

Tortoises can blend into grass and are surprisingly fast! This little flower helped us keep an eye on him while he explored. Safe, supervised, and undeniably adorable. ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ”โœจ Tales and Tails โ€“ Week 3: Birds & Egg-Laying Animals! โœจ๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿฆ‹

This week in Tales and Tails we explored birds and the amazing variety of ways animals begin life!

We read the story of the hardworking chicken who baked bread all on her ownโ€”learning about responsibility, effort, and what happens when others donโ€™t lend a hand. ๐Ÿž๐Ÿ”

Then, we dove into science after reading a second story and discovered that eggs come in many forms from many critters. We looked at bird eggs, butterfly eggs that eventually become caterpillars and butterflies, and even learned about โ€œmermaidโ€™s pursesโ€โ€”the unique leathery egg cases that sharks and rays lay in the ocean! ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆˆ

We talked about feathers and how they help birds fly, stay warm, stay dry, and survive in their environments. ๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿฆ We also preformed the egg drop test to see how to tell good eggs from bad eggs for cooking purposes!

Next, the kids participated in an egg drop race (with fake eggs๐Ÿ˜‚). Finally, we enjoyed some locally baked sourdough bread and locally made berry jam, just like our first story.

Stories, science, and hands-on curiosity made for another wonderful week of learning with our young explorers!
