A father died after he and his son were electrocuted while painting a church in Washington, The Seattle Times reported.

The two men were using an aluminum ladder outside the Madrona Grace Presbyterian Church in Seattle, according to the Times. The father, 52, and the son, 27, were standing on the ground Saturday when a gust of wind blew the ladder they were moving into a nearby power line and electrocuted them, a news release from the Seattle Police Department said.

The father died at the scene while the son was taken to a hospital, according to the release. The pastor of the church plans to launch a fund for the men’s families, the Times reported.

WHAT IS ALL THAT WHITE POWDER? During a recent inspection and cryogenic cleaning of a customers medium voltage system, this large pile of white powder was found. Anyone know what it is? HINT: This mainly occurs in MV systems.

It is Nitric Acid that is eating away at your insulators. Who put Nitric Acid there.... you did. When you have dirty insulators (barriers, sleeving, air, etc) and the dielectric between your conductors gets low, electricity will start to arc across that insulator. When that arc happens the intense heat and the jumping electrons combine with elements in our air. Our Air is about 78%Nitrogen & 19% Oxygen so that will cause the creation of Nitric Oxide. With moisture H2O (humidity, steam, etc), nitric oxide reacts with oxygen and to form nitrous acid (HNO2).

[High School Chemistry Equation -> 4 NO + O2 + 2 H2O → 4 HNO2.]

That nitric acid eats causes insulation decay which compounds the arcing problem. Eventually it will fail and a flash over will occur.

How to detect it: Visual inspection, Ultrasound inspection (while running with doors closed), electronic detectors, etc.
How to prevent it: Cleaning (Cryogenic Cleaning), environmental controls.
