🎓 From Student to Instructor: A Journey of Opportunity, Growth, and Purpose
My name is Bill Bruce, and this is my "Why":
Like many young people graduating from high school, I wasn't exactly sure which direction I wanted to take. Looking for opportunity and a sense of purpose, I joined the Navy, where I received training, traveled, and began a career in avionics electronics. My time in the military was a great adventure. While I learned a great deal about electronics, I also gained valuable experience in many other areas along the way.
When my military service came to an end during a period of downsizing, I returned home and began searching for work. I believed my military training and experience would easily open doors to employment. However, I soon discovered that many employers, from local industries to government agencies, were looking for different types of education and training that better aligned with the needs of the local workforce.
That realization led me to enroll in my first program at the local Vocational-Technical School, where I studied Electronics. As I explored career opportunities, I discovered that electronics alone was not in high demand in the Cumberland County area. Determined to find a career path that would lead to meaningful employment, I returned to TTCC (Tennessee Technology Center at Crossville) and enrolled in the Industrial Electricity program while working as a tile production operator.
Completing the Industrial Electricity program opened new doors for me. I was able to transition into a maintenance position with the tile company where I was already employed. It was rewarding to see how the education and skills I gained directly contributed to advancing my career.
Later, an opportunity arose at the local hospital, where I combined my electronics training with hands-on problem-solving as a Biomedical Technician. As the hospital evolved and responsibilities changed, I transitioned into the maintenance department, where I continued building my skills and experience.
Eventually, my journey came full circle when I returned to TTCC as an Electronics Instructor. The school that had helped shape my career now gave me the opportunity to help others build theirs.
Over the years, both TTCC and I have experienced many changes. Today, I am proud to continue serving at TCAT (Tennessee College of Applied Technology) Upper Cumberland, helping students of all ages and backgrounds discover careers that align with their interests, talents, and goals.
Seeing students gain confidence, develop new skills, and find careers they enjoy is one of the most rewarding parts of my own journey.
My story is a reminder that your career path doesn't always have to be clear from the beginning. Sometimes, it takes exploring new opportunities, gaining additional training, and being willing to take the next step.
