Creating self-portraits is so much more than an art activity. During the First Six Weeks, our preschoolers are learning about themselves, their unique features, and what makes each person special.

As children look closely in the mirror, choose colors, and create their portraits, they are building important skills connected to Teaching Strategies GOLD — including fine motor development, creativity, language, observation, and a positive sense of self.

Activities like this help children begin the school year feeling seen, valued, and proud of who they are. 💛

🐚 CREATING A BEACH MOSAIC 🌊

We brought a little bit of the beach into our classroom! Our little artists used shells and other beach-inspired materials to work together to create a beautiful classroom mosaic beach scene.

As children selected, arranged, and glued each piece, they practiced fine motor skills, creativity, spatial awareness, and decision-making. Collaborative art also gives children the opportunity to contribute to something special they can all be proud of! 🤍

Our K-Prep cartographers are putting their map skills to work! 🗺️🌎✨

This week-long project took our little learners through the entire artistic design process—from brainstorming what we might see on a map, to using puzzles to explore how maps are designed, and finally creating their own unique maps with pencils, paint, and permanent markers!

Along the way, children strengthened literacy, fine motor, art, social studies, and early geography skills while building curiosity about how we see, understand, and travel around our world.

We love when one project brings so many areas of learning together! 💛

🎨💦 Dip, Drip, Splash! 💦🎨

Science and art came together in the most colorful way today! 🌈

Our little learners explored what happens when watercolor paint-soaked pom-poms are struck with a wooden block, creating vibrant splashes and unique works of art. With every dip, drip, and splash, children became little scientists—observing how water and paint move when they interact with force.

This hands-on invitation to create supported so much more than beautiful artwork:
✨ Explored cause and effect through experimentation
🎨 Encouraged creativity and artistic expression
🖐️ Strengthened fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
🧠 Built focus, concentration, and problem-solving as children carefully arranged their pom-poms before making their colorful splash!

There is something so meaningful about getting little hands in the soil. 🌱

Through planting experiences, children learn patience, responsibility, and the importance of caring for living things. Outdoor play and nature-based learning also support problem-solving, language development, collaboration, and sensory exploration in ways that feel exciting and natural to young children.

At Little Learners Academy, we believe some of the best learning happens outside—where children can explore, discover, ask questions, and connect with the world around them. Watching our friends work together to plant and care for their garden helps build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. ☀️

Our bee hive inspired sensory table has been creating so much excitement and curiosity in the classroom! 🐝 Sensory play provides children with opportunities to explore textures, build fine motor skills, strengthen language development, and engage in imaginative play while learning about the important role bees play in our environment.

As children scoop, pour, sort, and create, they are also developing problem-solving skills, practicing cooperation with peers, and making meaningful connections through hands-on learning experiences. Sensory exploration encourages children to investigate the world around them in ways that are engaging, calming, and developmentally appropriate.

At Little Learners Academy, we believe meaningful learning happens through play, discovery, and experiences that spark children’s natural curiosity. 🌼
