There's a course with Dr. Sally Shaywitz and Dr. Bennett Shaywitz, co-directors of the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity. Dr. Sally Shaywitz is also the author of the renowned book, Overcoming Dyslexia.

It's online, self-paced. Start and stop as you have time. The course encourages you to set and and reach completion goals, but you set your pace.

This morning, we focused on how people with dyslexia may experience difficulties with phonological awareness. ❤️

But what exactly is phonological awareness—and how do these skills typically develop? This chart shows the progression from rhymes and syllables to individual speech sounds (phonemes) and more complex sound manipulation.

Remember: these are general developmental expectations, not strict cutoffs. 📚

You may have heard statistics about dyslexia and learning disabilities—but what do those numbers actually mean?

Graphic novels are reading. 📚
And for a child who struggles with reading, they may be the books that finally make reading feel doable and enjoyable.
The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity refers graphic novels as the great equalizer! Graphic novels can help strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence, and foster an appreciation of story.
And here’s something that might surprise you: research has found 53.5 rare words per 1,000 words in comic books, compared with 30.9 in children’s books and 52.7 in adult books.
Talk about vocabulary development! 🙌
And don’t underestimate engagement and motivation. When kids get hooked on the characters and story, especially in a series, they want to read the next book...and then the next one.
There are SO many graphic novels out there. Humor, adventure, fantasy, history, sports, friendship, nonfiction-There really is something for just about every child’s age and interests.
Check out the graphic novel section. You might just find the book or series that gets that child reading.
