This Saturday, June 15, 2024, there will be a full day of Juneteenth celebrations presented by the Newton County Historical Committee on Black Heritage Preservation!
Kick off your morning at the Covington Farmers Market, which opens at 9 a.m. (open until noon) at the Covington Welcome Center (1143 Oak Street SE, 2 blocks east of the Square), to get foods, treats and gifts for Father's Day or just to complete your shopping list for the week.
Then head to the Square or hang out at the farmers market to enjoy the annual Juneteenth parade that starts at 10 a.m. The parade will travel from Legion Field down Floyd Street into the Square; around the interior of the Square to College Avenue; and then down East Street to Floyd Street, back to Legion Field.
After the conclusion of the parade, head over to the old R.L. Cousins High School (8134 Geiger Street) for the Juneteenth Festival from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. From bouncers to food as well as music, a friendly game of basketball between public safety rivals, and more, it will be a day full of joyous observance of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday.
Self-advocacy is being able to speak up for your needs and what's important to you and to be able to communicate them. Students must understand their strengths and weaknesses/needs While often these accommodations are included in an IEP or 504 plan, teaching students how to self-advocate is an important life skill and a step toward building independence.
