Cool organic jobs in North Carolina!

Our program has FOUR positions we are currently trying to fill. If you have always thought that working for the NC Alternative Crops and Organics Program with NC State University would be fun, now is your opportunity to apply! These positions are all based out of Mills River, NC which is south of Asheville and 250 miles west of main campus.
Our projects in the coming years are focused on forest farming of medicinal herbs (ginseng, goldenseal, black cohosh, bloodroot, etc.), breeding hops for the Southeast, commercial production of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, trialing new organic tomato varieties, growing fiber h**p for making new products to replace plastics such as agricultural mulch, and doing lots of agroforestry training for natural resource professionals. All the positions will be working outdoors in the fields and forests. The two year round positions will also organize workshops and trainings, teach, analyze data, write extension and research papers, and give professional presentations.

This public event will bring together breeders, farmers, chefs, bakers & beverage makers to discuss and celebrate the benefits of participatory plant breeding.

The evening will provide the opportunity for researchers, growers & consumers to play an essential role in guiding the development of new crop varieties. This year's iteration of "Farm to Flavor" will have a special emphasis on culinary grains including wheat, rye, oats, barley & corn.

This event is organized by University of Wisconsin, Oregon State University, Artisan Grain Collaborative and Cornell University. Funding from the USDA-OREI-NIFA project Value-Added Grains for Local and Regional Food Systems II.

There's still time to register for the Student Organic Seed Symposium, recommended for students interested in plant breeding and organic production! The deadline is July 1, but travel funding is available for students who register with a deadline of June 20th. This year’s event will be held July 27th – 31st at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. The theme for this year’s event is “Small-scale agriculture: sowing sustainable local food systems” and the organizers have planned an exciting lineup of speakers, field trips, and events planned! The SOSS is the major annual event of the Society of Organic Seed Professionals (SOSP), which is fiscally sponsored by Organic Seed Alliance. Through lectures, informal discussion, demonstration plots of participants’ breeding and seed work, and hands-on activities, the SOSS builds a growing community of graduate students, faculty members, farmers, and seed professionals working in organic and sustainable seed systems.

Registration is open to all organic seed advocates, graduate students, undergraduates, recent graduates, farmers, and seed professionals in the academic, non-profit, and private sectors!

Registration is open until July 1. There is travel funding available for students, with a registration deadline of June 20th to be considered.

USDA Publishes Origin of Livestock Final Rule for Organic Dairy

The USDA has just published its highly anticipated Origin of Livestock (OOL) final rule for organic dairy, intended to ensure that certified USDA organic dairy products are produced to the same consistent standard.
