Where your children learn how to learn.

06/15/2026

In most traditional schools, the class moves on whether your child fully understood the concept or not. Teachers simply don’t have the time to pause for every learner. Over time, these tiny gaps in understanding become massive roadblocks, especially in middle and high school, when concepts build on each other.

At Acton, we do it differently. Our learners use self-paced tools like Khan Academy and Lexia, and they are encouraged to go at their own pace and focus on mastery. So they only move forward once they’ve mastered the material. That means no gaps, no guessing, and no false sense of progress.

~ Research shows that early learning gaps compound and predict later academic struggles

~ Students taught to mastery retain information longer and perform better on complex tasks

~ Mastery-based learners report higher confidence and lower anxiety

Your child deserves an education built on solid ground, so they can soar confidently throughout their entire education journey.

A Quest at Acton is a hands-on, project-based learning experience built around a theme or storyline. Instead of traditional lessons, learners spend several weeks tackling real challenges, building things, solving problems, and collaborating with peers. Quest work is done in the afternoon, while the mornings are reserved for individualized focus on the core skills of math, reading, and writing.

Typically, a Quest runs about 4–6 weeks and is structured as a series of challenges tied to a narrative (for example: launching a business, exploring space, marine biology, or solving a scientific mystery). The goal isn’t just academics, but developing real-world skills like critical thinking, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, and culminating in a public exhibition or presentation of what learners created in front of a room full of parents (thus, practicing public speaking and presenting skills).

Another goal of the Quest is to help learners identify the topic areas that get them excited, so they can begin to get clarity on what may interest them career-wise. The schedule of Quests rotates every 4 years, so a typical student will do every Quest one time during their 4 years. Does this sound like more fun and engaging than memorizing facts for an exam or doing hours of homework every day? We sure think so, and our students seem to agree! And not just that, but when learning is more hands-on and fun, students are more likely to even remember what they learn. This is a win-win!

No one talks about this part: the second-guessing, or the feeling that something might not be right…and not knowing what to do about it.

Most parents leave the system because they start asking better questions. And they realize there might be another way to educate their child.

If you’ve been thinking about this, you’re not alone. Follow along as we explore what education looks like at Acton Academy.

Mental strength comes from learning how to face, manage, and overcome challenges. Instead of removing obstacles, let’s equip our children with the tools they need to thrive amidst life’s inevitable ups and downs.

How Acton Academy nurtures mental strength and grit in our learners:
✅ We intentionally design learning experiences that present real challenges, ensuring that each setback is a lesson in resilience.
✅ Our curriculum is built around the idea of “failing forward” so that students learn that mistakes are simply steps toward success.
✅ With guidance rather than intervention, children are empowered to tackle challenges head-on, cultivating both independence and confidence.

At our school, we don’t believe in overprotecting our learners. Instead, we create a environment where challenges are embraced as part of the growth process. We do things differently here, in every way. Follow us to see how we are revolutionizing education!

A child can be doing “fine” in school and still not be truly challenged. Here are a few things we often hear from parents before they start looking for something different.

1. “My child finishes work quickly and then just waits.”
2. “They are not struggling, but they are not excited either.”
3. “They used to ask more questions than they do now.”

Challenge is not just about difficulty but about engagement, curiosity, and growth. When children are appropriately challenged, they are more invested in their learning. They try harder and they care about the outcome.

When they are not, they learn to do just enough. This is something we work hard to avoid at Acton.

If any of this sounds familiar, it might be worth investigating to see your child needs a more engaging learning environment!

One of the biggest questions parents ask is how learning is measured without traditional tests. At Acton, students use self-paced systems with built-in checkpoints to ensure mastery before moving forward.

That means they aren’t just memorizing for a test. They’re actually understanding the material and will get extra practice if they need it. It creates confidence, ownership, and stronger long-term outcomes. Benjamin Bloom’s landmark mastery learning research found that when students were required to reach mastery before moving on (and given the time and conditions to do so) almost all students were able to learn the material well, not just some of them.

If you’re used to traditional grading systems, this shift can feel big, but it’s worth understanding.

According to the World Economic Forum, as stated in a recent Forbes article, the skills that will truly matter in the future are soft skills. Here’s are the specific skills listed: Complex problem-solving and critical thinking, adaptability and learning agility, communication and collaboration, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and growth mindset. If you’re an Acton parent - you’re in luck since we focus heavily on these soft skills, growth mindset, and the ability to learn and stay curious. Through our unique learner-led model that involves regular group work, Socratic discussions, active problem solving, and building internal motivation and a love of learning, we are 100% confident in our ability to foster these traits in our students. And that’s because we see these skills and character traits as a top level goal, and not a nice-to-have skill. You can rest assured that these essential skills are being nurtured at school. When the future is uncertain, you must focus on the character traits that are timeless, so your children will be set no matter what they will face in the years to come.
