I'm posting a comment I made on my own page, but decided to also post here. I try to keep my ego on check, but the acadrmic in me hates when I see ppl using what I’ve or written without attribution:

So--in the 2019 Drought Contingency Plan (you know the one they still haven't updated bc they are too busy manufacturing our water crisis and pushing for desal for future industrial water customers--not for us, remember)-- at Drought Stage 3-- the plan says that the target should be a 30% reduction in demand for treated water. Its worth noting that the plan excludes raw water consumption. Since some people are super interested in me not diatribing and my offering "realistic" solutions (lol), here's a re-statement of my positions

A) CONDUCT A WATER AUDIT IMMEDIATELY and PUBLISH WATER USAGE BOTH RAW AND TREATED BY ALL WATER USERS USING MORE THAN 100,000 gallons per day.

😎 HAVE A DAILY DASHBOARD OF THE AMOUNT OF WATER THESE CUSTOMERS ARE USING.

1) we not wait for system failure (Stage 4) to actually institute what is already in teh drought plan.

2) end high volume water users' drought exemption immediately.

3) mandate a reduction treated water consumption by 30%--for every single customer that uses more than 100,000 gallons per day.

--i would be open to modifying this based on the water audits; I have other ideas about this as well.

4) mandate reduced raw water consumption by 30%--for every single customer.

5) don't allow the real estate cartel to continue new builds (as it says in the plan)

6) don't allow the refilling of pools and jacuzzis

7) issue a quadruple drought surcharge for industry if they go over their allotment

also--we need to go after the water poachers. I know that there has been reports of water poaching to TCEQ, the water development boards, as well as our city officials but nothing has been done about that.

I would also be open to helping households install low water using shower heads and toilet additions, but the reality is that we would be saving a few gallons per days for HH and a 30% reduction for households wld affect basic sanitary conditions and the ability of families to cook and bathe. If we are going to get serious about the water crisis, The targets need to be high volume water users bc even if residents eliminated all our water use we only 15-16% of all the treated water we process and heavy indsutry would still be placing us in danger. Quite literally the efforts need to be directed at heavy industry. Also--if industry doesn't want those heavy fines, reductions, they can always invest in reuse/recycle their water.

Again, I cannot stress enough that these desal plants are not for us, they are for future high-volume water using corporation. Some of these corporations are just experimenting with their plants. Right now, the hillcrest desal plant's cost to build is $1.2 to 1.8 BILLION. The interest alone, righ now, is going to be $68 MILLION. Maintenance for the plant right now is estimated to be $32 MILLION per year. All those resources also mean that the city and residents' actual water infrastructure WILL BE NEGLECTED. moreover, we have settlement with the EPA that requires us spending millions of dollars on our neglected waste water infrastructure. This desal plant and others like it is a huge recipe for disaster and will only serve to put more stress on already stressed households. YALL have to stop letting special interests liek the port and these corporations drive our policy. The sooner you stop buying their bu****it, the better. The sooner we elect people with a people and environment centered appraoch the better off we will be.

If we didn't have such a crazy regime in power locally, at the state, and national level, we could have actually used the IRA to address inefficiencies in our water use, delivery, and recovery. that would have been some cool job creation. shoot, if we had officials who were really committed to true sustainability, we could have done some partnering w local higher ed to document our efforts and pay offs and we could be an example to other areas that have water issues. --As a social scientist, I do value reality, data, and evidenced-based efforts/analysis. You had zaphony, barrera, and others take a trip to carlsbad, you had zanoni and mayor pollute make a trip to DC to lobby for desal. you also had the mayor talking about devoting a ton of staff and resources to make desal happen---all that energy could have gone to the above. but, they aren't interested in solving the water crisis. They were and always have been working FOR industry. Imagine if they put that effort in working FOR the people. nin

It looks like the outside special interest corporations have formed a new 501c6 and are trying to “launder” their agenda through a new TAX EXEMPT group. Everyone, this is a textbook example of the sociological concept, Klasse für sich. Some groups have class awareness, class identity, class solidarity, and class consciousness. They are willing to expend resources to further their agenda by trying to shape the ideas and social structures within which they operate. That is exactly what this group is attempting to do. They formed a new group— I suspect in part because the people’s own growing awareness of how these groups have bought politicians and shaped policy to their advantage for so long and we can point to the groups (and elected officials complicit in) putting us in a water crisis while also failing to meet the basic needs of our community. Don’t fall for their C**a; stay strong, aware, and engaged. This just shows our ppl power is growing.
