Isabel was born and raised in Corpus Christi and went on to earn a PhD in Sociology from Boston College after starting out at Del Mar College. She now teaches at Del Mar, where she coordinates the Mexican American Studies Program, following nearly two decades at Texas A&M. I attended the Labor Council Breakfast this morning. It was a nice energy jolt that I needed. I grew up in a Union family; my dad was an active member of the local chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers. I am a member of the American Association of University Professors. Today, David Carranco of IBEW 278 reminded us that when Labor wins all workers do better. We need to remember that. Jose Cisneros, the names sake of Cisneros v CCISD (1970) was a Steelworker, an active member of the local Steelworkers union. They filed a lawsuit against CCISD bc in 1968, 14 years after Brown v Board, CCISD was still operating a segregated school system, one for African Americans and Mexican Americans and one for Non-Hispanic whites. The Steelworkers stepped up to fund that lawsuit, and in 1970, they won. My life/Our lives would not be possible if it weren’t for unions standing up for workers and working families. Those, and so many other, hard-fought victories are under attack. We need to vote for worker-centered candidates from the federal level, to the state level, to the local level! I am that candidate for city Council District 2! Let’s go!!!!

Good morning,
Everyone! I want to thank all of you who took the time to answer the question I posed Saturday morning! 🥹 Most people don’t even entertain what they want bc before we sincerely think about our answer to the question I posed, we tend to think “How are we gonna pay for what I/others want?” So we resign ourselves to the state of affairs. In part bc we don’t want to increase the taxes of fees on ourselves. This is why I say, “Budgets are moral documents,” (which is a statement I’ve taken from the book: The Rich and the Rest of Us). What govt funds, who it taxes and charges fees to, are ultimately moral choices. I know we can increase services without burdening the people more, but city leadership has to do it AND people need to know about the revenue levers that exist. Bc knowledge IS power.
Here are MULTIPLE ways we can increase city revenue WITHOUT taking MORE from people. One approach tackles ndustrial District Agreements. (IDAs). The pic below is a summary of our IDAs, and we have at least 70 of them. I’ll pick this up later, I need to domestic stuff (cook, clean, grocery shop). But stay tuned!!!!! Here’s a novel idea: Instead of spending billions of dollars on a false solution to our water issues to continue behaviors that contribute to climate change, how about we increase our efficiency w water, fix our aging water infrastructure, pursue less costly alternative water water supplies that can mitigate flooding, and stop recruiting high volume water users to our area?

Today’s town hall at the senior center was so. much. fun.! The other candidates were very, very nice, and I appreciated that. I’m not good at small talk, and I need to be better at that. Those of yall who know me, know that I am a big nerd who loves our community. Today’s town hall affirmed for me that I am ready to serve District 2. Paying attention to city council meetings for the last ten years has prepared well. Having Sylvia as a core member of For the Greater Good has also been invaluable in helping all of understand the mechanics of city government. I am so grateful she’s our council member. I talked so fast at the forum, and I wish I wld have taken a breath and not tried to squeeze in so much in my allotted time to answer the questions. But, I also was excited to give answers that were rooted in both a philosophy about government and in facts. I really hope I earned ppl’s votes and confidence.

Also thank you to everyone who showed up to support me and who called me to give me a little pep talk! I love yall so much!!!! XOXOX!!!
