Sink Your Shucks Oyster Recycling Program

Sink Your Shucks reclaims oyster shell from local restaurants and returns it to our bays, providing the foundation for new oyster reefs and creating habitat.

Since 2009, the Harte Research Institute's program has recycled over 3.5 million pounds of shell.

Turns out oysters aren't the only ones who like a little shell cake! Come sample our alternative restoration materials with us. 🌊

Traditionally, mesh material is used for oyster reef restoration. These 'shell cake' units are made from a calcium-based cement and recycled Sink Your Shucks oyster shell to provide a hard structure for oyster spat to settle on. They also provide habitat for the variety of organisms seen in this video. 🦪 🦀 🐟

The moment you’ve been waiting for… RESTORATION IS BACK THIS FALL! 🦪🌊🙌

For the first time ever, Sink Your Shucks is bringing community oyster reef restoration to the fall and YOU'RE invited!
Volunteer with us on Saturday, October 3 at Goose Island State Park to get hands-on with restoration. We’ll be bagging recycled oyster shell and putting it right into the bay to help create new oyster reef habitat.

Today, we’re celebrating the second life every oyster shell gets through the Sink Your Shucks program.

What you’re looking at is hundreds of thousands of pounds of recycled oyster shells waiting to return to Texas bays, where they’ll help restore oyster reefs and create habitat for marine life. 🦀 🦐 🐟

🦪 Where will you be celebrating National Oyster Day?!

Our partners have you covered! Every restaurant featured here recycles its oyster shells through Sink Your Shucks, giving them a second life restoring oyster reefs instead of sending them to the landfill.

And if you want to shuck at home, don’t forget about our local oyster farms! Many sell fresh oysters by the sack and recycle their shells, too. ♻️

It’s been a BIG quarter for shell recycling! ♻️

More than 60,000 pounds of oyster shell were collected from just our top five recycling restaurants! 🤩

We’re also celebrating partnership anniversaries with:

Castaways Seafood & Grill – 1 year

AND two restaurant partners reached new personal records for shell collected! 🎉
